The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.


The Opportunity

As a Senior Advisor, Financial Planning & Analysis, you will manage financial planning and analysis processes to optimize the achievement of IESO's strategy. Key aspects of the role include leading the financial aspects of regulatory filings and other external reporting (e.g. provincial ministries and board); including strategic analysis to support a successful outcome and providing analytical leadership in resource management along with recommendations for management decision making. In addition, you will support the establishment of new strategies, policies, standards, procedures, communication vehicles, and management systems.

What you'll do

  • Oversee, analyze, and perform budgeting of key corporate areas, leveraging best practices and exercising professional and independent financial judgment, to ensure alignment with IESO's strategy and corporate measures.
  • Proactively provide advice, guidance and well-supported recommendations, by monitoring performance and identifying risks, to support the achievement of planned objectives and management of risks.
  • Acting as subject matter expert and incorporating the assistance of other team members, provide leadership to financial aspects of the various phases of the regulatory filing process, addressing complex or sensitive issues to ensure a successful submission.
  • Liaise with cross-functional groups to address resource management issues, providing recommendations to senior management for decision making, based on evaluation of alternative solutions to ensure alignment with IESO's priorities and considering risk impacts
  • Cultivate effective relationships with business leaders and other key stakeholders, to develop insight, provide advice and discuss impacts in the area of resource and financial management, resolving complex, ambiguous and changing issues independently and demonstrating flexibility of thought.
  • Lead the preparation of strategic communications for various external reporting (e.g. ministries, Ontario Energy Board), to ensure proper representation of IESO's priorities and performance.
  • Coordinate with Finance and Accounting team to ensure alignment of management and statutory reporting, and application of policies, standards and procedures across the business
  • Represent FP&A (Financial Planning & Accounting) at the Prioritization Steering Team to assess business cases, ensuring financial and/or resourcing aspects are considered and highlighted prior to submission to PPMT for decision making.
  • Act as strategic partner to Project Management Office (PMO), exchanging information and providing guidance on financial matters to optimize planning process and ensure alignment with IESO's strategy
  • Lead change to support the establishment of new strategies, policies, standards, procedures, communication, process improvements and enhancements to management systems.
  • Exercise limited supervision over others to assist on certain projects or assignments.

What you need to succeed

  • Requires comprehensive knowledge of business administration, accounting principles, financial and management accounting, reporting and analytical techniques;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to influence and communicate effectively across the company and externally;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, that allow to ask critical strategic questions and challenge basic assumptions, while building strong relations at all levels of the organization;
  • Ability to conduct research and analysis, and distill this information into insightful communication tools (e.g. memos, presentations);
  • Ability to provide sound recommendations supported by facts and analysis;
  • Strong organization and attention to detail;
  • Requires experience with budget development, modeling and financial reporting, preferably in a public sector or not-for-profit organization
  • Prior experience in making improvements to standardize, and simplify budgeting and forecasting processes
  • High level of proficiency with the use of Microsoft Office suite of products, and experience using Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) tools or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools is an asset
  • Demonstrated success in organizing and delivering cross-functional projects with well-defined outcomes and adherence to timeline
  • A period of over 8 years, and up to and including 10 years, is considered necessary to gain this experience
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4 year University degree in business administration, accounting, commerce (or their equivalent);
  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA - CA, CGA, CMA) is a requirement for this position.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Toronto location.
