The Community Service Worker provides support to the food bank program provided by Khi Community and Family Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Family Services and Warehouse

  • Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, sorting, reorganizing, and re-stocking food and toy donations for the Family Services program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
  • Assist other food bank staff with pick-ups of food/toy donations from community donors.
  • Re-stock freezers as required; re-package bulk food and toy/household donations as directed.
  • Assist with keeping the warehouse and storage areas tidy and clean.
  • Assist with restock various food/toy storage areas.
  • Assist in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the warehouse as needed.

Health and Safety

  • Adherence to all health and safety standards.
  • Assist with ensuring that the Food Bank is maintained in organization, appearance, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 30 hours per week from May 13, 2024, to July 12, 2024
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required and schedule may vary from week to week.
  • Ability to lift/move more than 20 lbs. (9 kg).
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • The working environment is typically in the food bank /warehouse in generally agreeable conditions.

Normal hours of work: The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements which are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable. Some weekend and evening work may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Completion of grade 10.
  • Current, valid Safe Food Handling Certification or willingness to obtain.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience working and/or volunteering in community-based programs, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Power Point.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.

  • Ability to work with little supervision but also able to accept direction when necessary.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
