Shift Work Required Yes - Combination in-office day shifts and in-centre evening shifts. Monday-Saturday: days (8:00am-4:00pm), evenings (1:00-9:00pm)

Position Summary

The Clarington Youth Centres (CYC) offer a wide range of programming tailored to the diverse youth and needs within the Municipality of Clarington. The CYCs operate as a free after-school drop-in program for youth between 12-19 years old with a fun and encouraging environment designed to foster social and recreational development as well as enhance self-confidence and life skill development. You can expect your work hours to be scheduled around the operational hours of the Centre which is currently Tuesday to Saturday.

Our services and support are based on our 5 Pillars of Programming: Social/Leisure, Sports/Recreation, Life skills, Creative/Arts, and Volunteer/Civic Engagement. We offer a variety of activities, keeping the voice of youth and developmental experiences at the centre of our programming.

The 3 CYC locations are within the Municipality of Clarington:

The Loft - Courtice

The Firehouse - Bowmanville

NYC - Newcastle

Key Relationships

Clarington Youth Centre Coordinator, JHS Durham management team, agency employees, service seekers, youth participants, and other community agencies and stakeholders.


Responsibilities

  • Support summer programming (community programs and in centres)
  • Outreach to businesses and community agencies that are relevant to youth to Enhance programs and services provided through CYC youth surveys to inform gaps, needs and what is going well
  • Use social media and technology to connect with youth and market the program and events

This position involves developing and implementing youth-based community events that promote youth empowerment, inclusion, and direct linkages to community organizations. To enhance the programs and services provided through CYCs.

In consultation with program staff, this role will develop a work plan to initiate a variety of events that will be flexible and responsive to the needs of youth in our community. The role will network with local community leaders and agency staff throughout the duration of the project to ensure ongoing relevance and support of program outcomes.

Specific Duties:

  • Outreach to key community partners to promote events, collaborate and engage targeted youth
  • Create partnerships with local business, community groups, cultural and faith groups to increase knowledge of youth programs that support outcomes
  • Design, implement and evaluate events
  • Connect youth participants to programs and services represented at events
  • Follow up with youth to evaluate effectiveness and satisfaction of events
  • Develop related marketing and promotion of event
  • Attend community meetings as necessary
  • Prepare event summary report and follow up recommendations to Program Director and Coordinators


Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in post-secondary education related to human services, social work, recreation and leisure, or other related fields
  • Recreation experience is an asset
  • Strong sense of community and understanding the challenges youth face in the society in which we live

Personal Attributes:

  • A passion for working with youth and youth programming relevant to youths' needs and current trends
  • Able to take initiative and work as part of a team
  • Experience being an amazing role model and/or mentor for youth
  • Organized yet flexible, creative, and fun

Technical Skills:

  • Ideas for leveraging social media for our work with youth
  • Proficiency in using Windows NT/WAN operating systems
  • Competence in using the Internet, Outlook, and Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Licenses and Insurance:

  • Valid Class G driver's license with appropriate 2 million liability insurance is an asset
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset
  • Crisis Intervention training and certification is an asset
  • ASIST Certification is an asset
  • Satisfactory Police/Vulnerable Sector Check, if selected for the position

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in all youth centre locations and other JHS locations as required
  • Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, sports etc.
  • May require lifting up to 35 lbs.
