What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description

As a Lifeguard, you will perform lifeguard and swim instructor duties for children and youth, and will have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of the pool and occupants.
  • Provide children and youth with lessons on how to swim and with instruction on general water safety.
  • Provide customer service by maintaining public relations and professional interaction with children and youth, parents, clinicians, and external contractors.
  • Maintain filtration system and water chemistry of the pool by conducting chemical tests of the pool several times per day, working with the external contractor for chemicals (limited exposure).
  • Maintain water quality by vacuuming and backwashing the pool and monitoring the maintenance and supply of recreational supplies.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and manage daily assigned work.


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):

  1. Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
  2. Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
  3. Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
  4. Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You have experience working with children and youth in a lifeguard capacity.
  • You apply your customer service, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills to assist clients and work collaboratively within a team environment.


Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • You must currently be certified as a lifeguard (National Lifeguard Services Canada) OR you can obtain certification before the start of employment (if you are currently certified, please include your certification number on your resume).
  • You have current certifications in Standard First Aid and CPR OR you can obtain certification before the start of employment.
  • You apply your knowledge and experience performing lifeguard and swim instructor duties to teach water safety to children and youth.
  • You must be a proficient swimmer and be able to swim at least 300 metres without stopping (required).


Analytical and Organizational Skills

  • You apply your attention to detail to ensure the safety of children and youth.
  • You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.
  • You apply your discretion and sensitivity skills when working with confidential information.
