Job Description Summary

Student Health Service offers students at the UBC (Vancouver) campus a wide range of health services provided by family physicians, nurses and specialists. The staff physician provides primary care to individuals and participates in health promotion programming for the campus community. SHS physicians must integrate their knowledge and skills of adolescent and early adult health care issues with University specific requirements, using both University and external resources.

Organizational Status

The position reports to the Director of Student Health Service. The staff physician works closely with other primary care and specialist physicians, nurses, and medical office assistants. Collaboration occurs with Health Promotion & Education specialists, and Counselling Services. There is frequent contact with the Centre for Accessibility, the Managers, Student Services, International Student Development, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, awards and financial aid officers, and other University staff and faculty. Vancouver General Hospital (UBC Hospital) employees and physicians work in close proximity and are often consulted or asked to take over care of a patient.

Work Performed

The SHS staff physician is responsible for care of patients for a full range of primary care issues including mental, physical and social health. She/he actively provides care through on-line booked appointments and same day appointments. Participation in health promotion programs to promote wellness includes development of web based information, and presentations related to Health & Wellbeing at various venues on campus, including educational content for faculty, staff and students.

Working Conditions

The staff physician works in the Student Health Clinic(s) at the University of British Columbia. The clinic is open during the week, and some evenings and weekends. The staff physician participates in a call schedule when the clinic is closed. The integrated clinic(s) are shared with other physicians, health professionals and staff. The hazards are biomedical in nature. There may be occasional need to lift or support an ill patient.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The staff physician at Student Health Service takes on all the responsibilities of a fully licensed physician. Decisions are made in consultation with the patient. Patient charts are periodically audited by staff peers.

Supervision Received

The family physician is supervised by the Director of Student Health Service. The supervision is limited to policy, hours and work assignments. Specifically, the staff physician is expected to work with colleagues and allied health professionals as required but is not subject to direct supervision of the care s/he provides to patients.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications for the staff physician position include a medical degree and eligibility for a license to practice in British Columbia. Postgraduate qualification in Family Medicine or Sports Medicine is preferred.An interest in mental health, sexual health, addiction medicine, or indigenous health would be an asset. CMPA or equivalent malpractice insurance is required. Experience in a Post-secondary education health clinic or a community health clinic with a health promotion component is desirable. A minimum of three years of clinical experience is essential. Familiarity with word processing/computers is an asset (Windows and Medical Software is preferred). The medical charts, billing system and appointment schedule are all electronic. Physicians type their clinical notes.
