Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Program Coordinator or designate, provides personal care and/or assists clients with serious mental illness, with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, meals, laundry and organization; provides one-on-one personal care and observation of designated clients as directed by the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN); reports observations of clients' conditions to designated nursing staff; facilitates clients' participation in psychosocial rehabilitation activities; transports and accompanies clients on appointments and activities.
Responsibilities

  1. Provides personal care and/or assists clients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, prosthetics and elimination.
  2. Assists clients in making beds, personal laundry, organizing personal belongings and in assisting them in retrieving personal care supplies from storage area as required.
  3. Monitors client safety and assists with feeding of designated clients.
  4. Weighs clients, monitors clients' nutritional/fluid intake and elimination and collects specimens as directed. Charts information and reports problems and/or changes to designated nursing staff.
  5. Provides one on one personal care and observation of designated clients as directed by the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN).
  6. Assists nursing staff with care of clients in seclusion rooms as directed by the RN/RPN including assisting with activities of daily living and delivering food.
  7. Reports observations of clients' conditions to designated nursing staff in accordance with established procedures/practices and records observations on the client health care record.
  8. Participates in team meetings and ward rounds as directed and provides feedback on observations related to client care provided for designated clients.
  9. As directed by the RN/RPN or Occupational Therapist, facilitates clients' participation in psychosocial rehabilitation activities by methods such as setting schedules and participating in scheduled individual and group activities.
  10. Escorts clients off unit for treatment or diagnostic procedures; transports clients utilizing mechanical aids such as wheelchairs and/or stretchers.
  11. Transports/escorts clients to offsite appointments/services by operating a passenger vehicle. Books client trips, alters schedules, arranges time for pickup and dropping off clients.
  12. Participates in orientating clients, families, staff, volunteers, and students to the unit by familiarizing them with the layout of the unit, client rooms and unit routines.
  13. Assists care team with routine search of rooms and client belongings in order to maintain unit safety.
  14. Assists clients with retrieval/storage and/or relocation of personal effects to different rooms within the unit.
  15. Participates in quality improvement activities as assigned by providing input and feedback on department initiatives.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Mental Health Care Worker Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid Class 5 BC driver's license with access to personal vehicle for business purposes.
