Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision and direction of a senior position such as a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Registered Nurse or Recreation Therapist, assists designated residents with assigned rehabilitative activities.
Responsibilities

  1. Assists assigned residents with established rehabilitative activities such as mobility and strengthening exercises, walking programs and activities of daily living; demonstrates the use of prescribed treatment/adaptive devices such as braces, wheelchairs, seating devices and walkers, modified eating utensils and personal care items to residents, as directed.
  2. Participates in the retraining for optimal function in resident's personal/self care related to activities of daily living by assisting with self care, meal management, eating utensils and modification of clothing, as required.
  3. Assists residents in dressing and toilet needs, as required, in preparation for and following rehabilitative treatment; assists with resident lifting/transfers and positioning as directed.
  4. Transports residents to and from rehabilitative treatment area utilizing mechanical aids such as wheelchairs and stretchers.
  5. Attend resident care conferences and other related meetings such as in-services and educational sessions, as directed and participates in department quality improvement initatives.
  6. Reports observations of resident's behaviour and progress to Therapist/Nurse; communicates concerns and/or changes to the resident's condition.
  7. Completes resident care statistics and records program information as per established procedures.
  8. Sets up and organizes equipment for related activities as directed; cleans and maintains equipment and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate staff.
  9. Maintains established inventory of equipment, devices and materials.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
