Reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic, the Department Head provides operational and administrative leadership to program academic and non-academic staff within a department to achieve the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. A department consists of a group of programs and has both instructional, administrative, and non-administrative staff supporting it. Primarily responsible for managing faculty and staff, the Department Head will also plan and coordinate the operational needs of the department, develop and implement strategies and efficiencies at the program level and ensure excellent student experience in alignment with NAIT’s Vison, Promises and Values. The successful candidate will be assigned to one of the four departments within the JR Shaw School of Business.

The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced manager, an influential leader and has a proven track record of success. They are highly collaborative by nature, comfortable in an environment of change and thoroughly invested in process improvement. They understand the importance of relationship building and will demonstrate respect and open-mindedness while supporting their team.

The successful candidate will manage complexity while planning and prioritizing work in alignment with organizational goals. They will effectively manage conflict and drive engagement within the department while instilling trust.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages operational activities for all programs within the Department
  • Leading and developing an effective team environment through service integration; the direction and mentoring of staff members; encouraging and facilitating learning and skills development; developing and implementing plans to meet future human resource needs; ensuring that infrastructure is supported with appropriate human, financial, and technical resources
  • Creates and promotes a culture of excellence, cooperation, consultation and respect both internal and external to the department
  • Participates in NAIT-wide initiatives to provide leadership and consultation at the Department level
  • Ensures established student number targets are met and admission programs meet quotas
  • Leads the preparation of operating and capital resources for the Department; manages and monitors department incomes and expenditure budgets
  • Manages instructor workloads (IWAS) and provides class design information to Scheduling (courses and class sections) based on recommendations from the Chair
  • Works closely with the chairs to ensure the operational needs of the programs are met supporting sustainable delivery of quality curriculum and instructional excellence.
  • Complies with quality assurance and risk management procedures, both internally and externally

Qualifications:

  • Relevant Post-Secondary education. Related degree preferred.
  • Several years of progressive, relevant leadership experience is required.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset.
  • NAIT experience is an asset.
  • Equivalencies may be considered.

Remuneration: $96,356.78 - $136,593.60 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
