Assistant Professor (Teaching) or Associate Professor (Teaching), Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) at the University of Calgary invites applications for academic scholars in Small Animal Clinical Sciences. There are two, full-time or part time, limited term (3 years) positions available. Opportunities for joint hires with external practices are a possibility. The successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) or Associate Professor (Teaching). The anticipated start date is August 15, 2024, or a mutually agreed upon date.

Position description and associated responsibilities
The position will have 90% of its time focused on teaching with 10% dedicated to service. Teaching will largely be comprised of hands-on instruction of undergraduate DVM students in clinical skills laboratories and in the professional skills program. There will also be a requirement of administrative duties to support the clinical skills course. A small contribution will be to didactic, clinical and field course teaching. Clinical duties are integrated within the teaching role and the time allocation spent on clinical duties is open for discussion. Teaching will be assigned by the Associate Deans, Faculty Affairs & Development. Service includes time to be on committees that help contribute to the functioning of the university.

Position requirements, qualifications, skills and achievements required for the appointment
Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) with demonstration of continuing education and experiences that demonstrate a high standard of small animal clinical practice. A minimum of 5 years of clinical practice is expected. Past teaching experience is considered an asset. The applicant must be licensed or be eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta as a general practice registered veterinarian.

Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) normally requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Commitment to, or experience with, defining learning goals, supporting student learning activities and engagement, and creating assessment strategies may also be required. Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and curriculum design of the relevant discipline or field as well as engaging in other scholarly professional or creative activities that strengthens and informs the academic staff member's knowledge base and expertise is required.

Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching), in addition to the requirements for an Assistant Professor (Teaching), requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, a demonstrated ability to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning and student engagement, to design student learning experiences and assessment strategies grounded in a clearly articulated teaching philosophy, and to engage in scholarly, professional, or creative activities. Continuous development and demonstration of a scholarly foundation for designing and implementing innovative teaching and that supports student learning, ability to create respectful and inclusive learning environments that promote student engagement, participate in learning activities, networks and communities, and engagement in reflective practice to adjust and strengthen one's teaching, learning and assessment practices is required.

Applicants to the teaching-focused stream will devote the majority of their time to teaching within UCVM, which can include lecture teaching, lab instruction, graduate program teaching along with service on teaching-related committees. Service to the department, faculty, University, and community is also expected.

Information about the faculty
UCVM's DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year, with an expected expansion to 100 students.
