Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

Assist in the planning and delivery of school age childcare programs (for assigned age groupings) within the applicable legal, financial and safety framework.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide input into planning and assist with the implementation of appropriate aged-based activities according to skill and learning levels that promote social interaction, personal development and successful inclusion.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioral challenges.
  • Responsible to familiarize self with each child attending this program recognizing and supporting each of their individual needs.
  • Provide assistance with personal care as needed.
  • Assist with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, allergies, and facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid.
  • Routinely sanitize toys, inspect and dispose of hazardous items
  • Responsible for communicating with parents and accountable for signing the children in and out
  • Responsible for creating a welcoming environment for all children and parents
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Child Care Program Director or designate.
  • Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Flexibility in scheduling required to meet program requirements.
  • Assistant Program Director will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently: repetitive tasks, heavy lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Long periods of standing, walking; carrying; sitting; twisting; climbing and stooping; kneeling or crouching.

Normal hours of work: Work schedule will be set by your Assistant Program Director or designate as per program hours of operation, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and includes ½ paid meal break.

This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:

  • be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Note: International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed Secondary School.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification, Level C
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior work experience working with children (including special populations) and previous day camp experience will be recognized as an asset.
  • Completed a Babysitter’s Course
  • Current Immunization

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors and volunteers are strictly confidential.
  • Able to lift 50lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Must have physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure fast pace conditions.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $20.09 to $25.11 with a maximum of $30.13.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
