Job summary

This is a Full-time, 15-month contract position (maternity leave coverage), reporting to the President, with the HR & Payroll Specialist reporting to you. (Hybrid — 3 days/week) The Role We're looking for an HR Manager who can step in and run the HR function across our 11 store locations while our HR Director is on maternity leave. You'll lead the team day-to-day, own employee relations end-to-end, personally drive recruitment (including active headhunting, not just managing a process), and be a key point of contact for HR across the business. You're expected to bring ideas and push for improvements where you see them - this isn't a caretaker seat. This is a role for someone who wants to lead and own outcomes for 15 months - not someone looking to coast through a temporary assignment. What you'll do * Directly supervise the HR & Payroll Specialist and provide guidance to the Training Specialist as needed * Own all employee relations matters, from day-to-day issues through complex investigations and terminations * Personally lead full-cycle recruitment company-wide, including active sourcing/headhunting for open roles * Oversee payroll coordination, benefits administration, and HRIS accuracy, stepping in to troubleshoot as needed * Ensure ongoing compliance with Ontario ESA, OHSA, and Alberta employment standards * Keep existing HR initiatives on track, and improve them where you see a real gap * Complete a structured handoff with the outgoing HR Director before the leave begins, and maintain clear documentation throughout the contract What you bring * 5–8+ years of progressive HR experience, including direct people-management/supervisory experience * Strong working knowledge of Ontario employment law (Alberta exposure an asset) * Multi-site retail experience is a strong asset * Comfortable operating with high autonomy, leading a team, and proactively recruiting — not just administering an existing process * CHRP/CHRL is an asset, not required This role is for you if you... * Take ownership and lead without waiting for every decision to be handed to you * Enjoy building and improving, not just maintaining * Are confident handling sensitive, high-stakes ER situations * Can hold a team together and keep things moving across multiple locations Not for you if you... * Need constant direction or a fully defined playbook * Avoid hard conversations, investigations, or terminations * Are looking for a slow-paced or purely administrative HR role * Prefer to advise rather than execute Your total rewards package will include * Health, dental, and life insurance * RRSP program * Vacation time and paid personal emergency days * Employee discount * Perkopolis and GoodLife Fitness discount
