Data Center Network Technician L2 – Freelance Engagement: Freelance / On-Demand Role: Data Center Network Technician L2 Job Overview We are seeking an experienced Data Center Network Technician L2 to provide onsite Smart Hands / Hands & Feet support at data center facilities across Ohio. The technician will work closely with remote network engineering teams to troubleshoot fiber connectivity, network devices, and physical network infrastructure. The ideal candidate should have hands-on data center experience, strong Layer 1/Layer 2 troubleshooting skills, and practical knowledge of fiber optics and structured cabling. Key Responsibilities Provide onsite Smart Hands / Hands & Feet support at data center facilities. Assist remote network engineers with troubleshooting fiber patching and network connectivity issues. Troubleshoot physical connectivity involving: Fiber optics and fiber patching Network switches and other network devices Racks and patch panels Structured cabling Perform fiber cleaning and MPO/MTP troubleshooting. Use and accurately interpret VFL (Visual Fault Locator) readings. Perform basic Layer 1 and Layer 2 network troubleshooting, including: Ethernet connectivity Switch ports Patching and cross-connects Link status and physical connectivity Follow instructions from remote network engineers and provide timely updates through designated project communication channels. Document work performed, troubleshooting steps, and findings as required. Coordinate effectively with remote engineering teams to resolve onsite issues efficiently. Required Skills & Experience Hands-on experience working in data center environments. Minimum 2+ years of network or IT infrastructure experience, preferably within data centers. Strong understanding of basic networking concepts, including: Ethernet Switching VLANs Network ports Link status Physical connectivity Practical experience with fiber optics, fiber patching, and structured cabling. Familiarity with network switches, routers, racks, patch panels, and related network infrastructure. Experience performing fiber cleaning and MPO/MTP troubleshooting. Ability to use and interpret a VFL (Visual Fault Locator). Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work independently onsite while coordinating effectively with remote network engineering teams. Ability to provide clear, timely status updates and follow technical instructions accurately. Required Tools & Equipment Technicians must have access to: VFL (Visual Fault Locator) Basic networking and fiber troubleshooting toolkit Required site-specific PPE Smartphone with reliable internet access for project communication and team chat groups Preferred Qualifications Candidates currently located in Ohio or within reasonable traveling distance of the assigned data center locations. Previous experience providing Smart Hands / Hands & Feet support. Experience supporting remote network engineering or NOC teams. Familiarity with enterprise data center cabling standards and procedures. Engagement This is a freelance / on-demand opportunity. Assignments may vary based on project requirements and data center locations throughout Ohio. Candidates should be comfortable with onsite data center work, short-notice assignments when required, and coordinating with remote engineering teams to complete troubleshooting and physical network tasks.
