Job summary

The Community Worker Food Access and Supportive Employment is responsible for the facilitation and coordination of food preparation and service. This position reports to the Food Program Supervisor and works collaboratively with staff from Support Services. The position requires a thorough knowledge of food handling and safety with a demonstrated ability to prepare quality meals in a professional setting. Work Experience/Education/Credentials * Training and/or experience in operating community-based food programs. Competencies/Skills/Attributes * Knowledge of food handling and safety. * Demonstrated ability to cook healthy, tasty and easy-to-prepare food in professional setting. * Strong communication skills. * Experience in working with people with mental health and addiction issues. * Strong commitment to anti-oppression and working within a mental health recovery framework. * Knowledge, understanding and experience to support people in their employment through a supportive employment framework. * Strong leadership and group facilitation skills. * Strong organizational and time management skills. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. * Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office, as well as electronic record keeping systems. OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES * Coordinating and overseeing community kitchens. * Training and supervising participants cooks. * Facilitating and supporting participant involvement and learning about cooking and healthy eating. ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES * Be knowledgeable about and act within the relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), Mental Health Act, Child and Family Services Act, Persona Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Housing Services Act, Ontario Fire and Building Codes. * Model the organizational values, policies and professional ethics, and demonstrate commitment to the strategic direction. * Demonstrate active support for organizational direction and priorities in own actions. * Proactively engage in program and organizational change activities. * Model and promote a culture where everyone is accountable for making sure decisions and goals are met and projects/tasks are completed. * Identify and remove barriers to service excellence. * Demonstrate personal commitment and culture to wellness. * Embrace and demonstrate Neighbours values in your actions. * Participate in a work culture of positive thinking, initiative and creativity. * Commitment to improve professional knowledge to recognize trends and issues and deal with them effectively. * Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with allied community agencies and professionals and participate in community committees and internal Neighbours committees as required. * Comply with the policies of Neighbours including those pertaining to the confidentiality of client information. * Represent the agency in a positive manner with clients, colleagues and the community at large. * Attend regular supervision meetings with Program Manager for the purpose of reviewing work expectations and performance evaluation. * Participate in and represent the organization at external committees and forums as assigned. * Participate in internal committees and/or activities relating to the organization (IE staff annual general meeting, social recreational events, etc.). * Keep Manager or Supervisor informed and up to date on relevant issues. WORKING CONDITIONS * Exposure to household pests, bodily fluids, individuals experiencing crisis ,individuals who may be under the influence of substances, cleaning chemicals and some smoking environments. * Working hours are 35 hours per week. Operate independently and work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as required by operational needs. * Requirement to travel to and work from other Neighbours locations as required. As a condition of employment, a successful police record check is required.
