<h3>Job Description</h3><div>Job Description<div><p>The Gleaner is looking for a curious, motivated writer to join our small newsroom and help cover the stories that matter to people in the Chateauguay Valley.</p><p>We're a printed and digital community newspaper, and we believe local journalism makes a difference. This <b><strong>one-year renewable internship</strong></b> gives you real reporting experience - not busywork. You'll be out in the community, talking to people, attending events and meetings, and writing stories that actually get published.</p><p><b><strong>What you'll be doing</strong></b></p><p>You'll research and write articles for both our print edition and website, covering local news, community events, and Valley life. You'll write in both English and French, and contribute ideas for coverage. You'll attend public meetings, talk to residents and local figures, and bring back stories worth telling. You may also have the opportunity to contribute to our Farm to Food podcast in English. You'll support the editorial team with other writing and research tasks as needed, and ideally help with social media posts tied to your stories.</p><p><b><strong>The person we're looking for is:</strong></b></p><ul><li><b><strong>MUST be Bilingual (French and English)</strong></b>; you'll be writing and creating content in both languages</li><li><b><strong>MUST have a valid driver's licence</strong></b> and is willing to travel within the Chateauguay Valley of Quebec (Chateauguay, Ormstown, Huntingdon, etc.)</li><li>A strong writer with basic journalism <span class="long-word">skills/understanding</span></li><li>Curious, thorough, and comfortable asking questions</li><li>Interested in local community life, news, and the people of the Valley</li><li>Available approximately one weekend per month when coverage requires it</li><li>Flexible schedule, able to work 30-35 hours per week </li><li>reimbursement for fuel expenses</li></ul><p><br /></p><p>A background in journalism, communications, or creative writing is an asset, but genuine interest and good writing matter more than credentials.</p><p><b><strong>Eligible candidates must be (as required by the funding program):</strong></b></p><ul><li>18-35 years of age at the start of the position</li><li>A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been officially granted refugee protection in Canada</li><li>Legally entitled to work in Canada, including holding a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of the position</li></ul><p><br /></p><p><b><strong>What you'll gain</strong></b></p><p>Published bylines in a real newspaper.
