The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is seeking a producer to join its French Documentary Unit and contribute to the creation of impactful documentary works. This is a unique opportunity to join the team of producers in the NFB, by producing documentary works that resonate across the country and beyond our borders.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY:

• The National Film Board, Canada’s public producer and distributor of engaging, innovative and authentic audiovisual works, is looking for a Producer sharing the NFB’s commitment towards the francophone creative communities in the province of Quebec.
• This position will immerse you in the activities and productions of the NFB’s French Documentary Unit.
• You’ll be based in our Montreal office and will be part of an exciting and dynamic workplace, where a number of ambitious projects are currently underway. In addition to producing the work of emerging, mid-career and experienced filmmakers, you’ll be co-producing projects with established production companies, exploring issues that matter to Canadians, connecting with a diverse set of the region’s minority communities, advancing and strengthening Indigenous creators, and committing to gender and racial equity in all productions. You have an established network and possess strong connections in said community, offering the possibilities for filmmakers from the province of Quebec to create work in a context that promotes exploration and creativity, where artistic boldness and documentary rigour are combined.

SOME DETAILS:

• This is a unique opportunity for a temporary (13 months), full-time producer position. You’ll earn a salary in the range of $102,355 to $132,162 and enjoy a number of employee benefits—medical and dental insurance, a pension plan, paid leaves, and much more—in a unionized position, covered by the Syndicat Général du Cinéma et de la Télévision (SGCT-CUPE, local 4835).
• You will be part of a national team of world-class NFB producers located across Canada, working with filmmakers in French and English-speaking communities. Their work has been awarded at the Oscars, Webbys, CSAs, and more, as well as showcased at premiere international festivals, including TIFF, Sundance, Tribeca, Hot Docs, VIFF, IDFA, Berlin, Annecy and Cannes.
• You will participate in the creation and production of new and ongoing audiovisual works within the French Documentary Unit, offering creators an environment in the province of Quebec that encourages exploration and creativity, where artistic boldness and documentary rigour come together.
• You will work within a team that offers artists the opportunity to take creative risks and experiment with new ways of storytelling, while promoting a culture that highlights voices, stories, and perspectives that are generally underrepresented on the country’s screens.
• In addition to producing works by emerging, mid-career and seasoned filmmakers and creators, you will co-produce projects with established production companies, explore stories that matter to the Canadian population, build connections with various cultural communities in the region, and reach audiences both locally and internationally.
• You’ll collaborate with our in-house experts in a variety of fields, including business affairs, post-production, marketing and distribution, publicity and communications, education, and more.

ABOUT YOU:

You have proven abilities to build relationships with a wide range of creator communities. Your expertise in the production field is recognized, as are your aesthetic sensibility, critical thinking skills, creativity, judgment, and leadership. You know how to analyze a project at the proposal stage and evaluate its artistic and social merits, as well as its scope, risks, cost, and potential reach with audiences. You have the necessary skills to guide a project from its conception to production and completion. You bring to the team a unique life experience, perspective, or expertise that will enrich the NFB's programming. You are recognized as delivering projects on time and on budget.

You have excellent cross-cultural skills and the ability to foster strong relationships with diverse partners, communities and creators. You know the issues and stories in the Quebec region and have demonstrable skills in connecting with a broad range of communities and creators. You have first-hand knowledge of and experience with Indigenous arts today and you have a demonstrated commitment to gender parity and cultural diversity in the workplace.

You have strong organizational skills, proficiency with all standard digital office tools, and well-developed work practices. You are responsible, reliable, and capable of working independently, with excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work well in teams. Your experience living and working in the production industry has given you a strong portfolio of projects to showcase, along with in-depth knowledge of the financial and commercial aspects of audiovisual production, including key financing sources in the private sector and best practices in the industry.

You have a post-secondary degree or equivalent, matched with ten (10) years of relevant experience in the production industry and a solid portfolio of projects to show for it. Bilingualism in English and French is desirable and considered an asset.
