Who we need Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, we are hiring a Laboratory Technician to join our environmental testing laboratory in Sydney, Nova Scotia on a seasonal contract through December 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent science graduate or early-career professional looking to gain hands-on experience in an environmental laboratory environment. While the role includes some laboratory support responsibilities, the primary focus is supporting our Sample Reception team during our busiest season. You will play a critical role in ensuring environmental samples are received, processed, organized, and prepared accurately while providing excellent customer service to clients and supporting laboratory operations. This is a fully onsite position located at 465 George Street, Sydney, NS working Monday through Friday during standard business hours. As you become proficient in core responsibilities, there may be opportunities to expand your knowledge through cross-training and exposure to additional laboratory functions. Potential for future opportunities. While this position is being hired as a seasonal contract through December 2026, strong performance and business needs may create opportunities for contract extension or longer-term employment. How you will make an impact Support sample reception operations. You will receive, unpack, organize, and process environmental samples while ensuring accurate documentation and timely entry into laboratory systems. Deliver exceptional customer service. You will greet clients, answer basic inquiries, support bottle pickup requests, and help create a positive experience for customers visiting the laboratory. Coordinate sample logistics. You will prepare sample shipments, organize incoming and outgoing coolers, label bottles, assemble sample kits, and support the efficient movement of samples throughout the testing process. Ensure quality and accuracy. You will maintain accurate records, follow established procedures, and help ensure sample integrity and compliance with quality and safety requirements. Assist laboratory operations. As workload permits, you may support laboratory preparation activities and gain exposure to additional testing and laboratory procedures. What you bring Customer-focused communication. You are comfortable interacting with clients in person and over the phone. You communicate professionally, remain positive under pressure, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Attention to detail. You understand the importance of accuracy and take pride in following procedures, maintaining records, and ensuring work is completed correctly the first time. Physical capability. You are comfortable standing for most of the workday, moving throughout the facility, and lifting up to 50 pounds as required. Adaptability and initiative. You thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change. You are proactive, dependable, able to manage multiple priorities, and willing to step in wherever support is needed. Technical aptitude. You are comfortable learning new systems and using technology, including Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel, shipping software, and proprietary systems. Experience. Experience in customer service, administrative, laboratory or related experience is considered an asset. Education.
