About the role

This role is a temporary full-time STUDENT contract beginning June 26th, 2026 and running until August 21st, 2026.PURPOSE: For more than 100 years, BGC Ottawa has provided children and youth with a safe, supportive place to belong where they can play, learn and grow beyond the pressures of home and school. Serving more than 12,000 young people each year, BGC Ottawa delivers free programs and services across Ottawa through four Clubhouses, Camp Smitty and community-based neighbourhood programming. The Club is committed to equity, inclusion and opportunity, supporting children and youth from all backgrounds to build confidence, skills and brighter futures.GENERAL SUMMARYThis is a full-time, seasonal position that works closely with the Manager and Head Cook, the Kitchen Hand at our Camp Smitty location and will assist in the delivery of daily meals and ensure that the kitchen is maintained safely. RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIESMajor Responsibility 1: Provide food service in conjunction with Head Cook and maintain kitchenAssist in preparing and serving a well-balanced menu for all camp sessions. Ensures proper storage of all foods and catering equipment Assists in maintaining a safe and clean kitchen.Assists with kitchen inventory.Reports any issues with equipment to the Head Cook.Assists in maintaining a clean, sanitary and well-organized kitchen.Maintains a safe work environment.Contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere in the kitchenMajor Responsibility 2: TrainingFollow all BGC policies and proceduresAttend all BGC Training sessionsActively participate in staff meetings and staff evaluationPerform other related duties as requiredQualifications:Demonstrated Skills and Abilities:Excellent communication skillsExcellent time management skillStrong work ethic and high energy levelWell organized with excellent multi-tasking skillDemonstrated leadership skillsAbility to build constructive relationshipsAbility to work as part of a teamEffective communication skillsKnowledge of issues that affect children and youthKnowledge of child protection actKnowledge of anti-discriminatory practiceMultilingualism is an asset Required Education, Training and Experience:Currently in High School or Post SecondaryExperience working in a kitchen environment is an assetRecognized certification in first aidCompleted safe food handling course is and assetHIGH FIVE certificate is an assetAll successful candidates will be required to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) before starting their first shift. Compensation:Contract sum of $4250Start Date:June 22nd 2026 WORKING CONDITIONS:Some physical requirements are necessary for an employee to perform the essential functions of the job.
