Bring science to life at the Ontario Science Centre

Do you have a passion for science? Do you have exceptional interpersonal skills and enjoy engaging with the public? Bring your skills to the Ontario Science Centre where, as a host, you will nurture curiosity, learning and fun. You will bring science to life by asking thought-provoking questions, sparking creativity, and helping create lasting memories for children and families. You will engage visitors through hands-on facilitation, demonstrations, and inquiry-based conversations – sparking wonder and encouraging exploration of how science connects to everyday life.

These positions are irregularly scheduled, ranging from 0 to 36.25 hours per week, with no guaranteed minimum hours. Shifts are scheduled based on operational and program needs. Work on weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings is required. The Ontario Science Centre is a visitor-facing organization that operates year-round.

Occasional off-site community engagement and pop-up programming may be assigned, including work at partner locations across Toronto and Ontario.

About the job

As a Host, you will:

  • engage visitors enthusiastically, sparking curiosity and encouraging inquiry conversation and interactive experiences
  • facilitate learning through play, making, and tinkering experiences for audiences of all ages
  • deliver presentations, demonstrations, workshops, and programs in indoor, outdoor, and pop-up environments, tailored to diverse audiences
  • provide outstanding visitor care by anticipating needs and supporting positive experiences
  • apply knowledge of child development and early learning in informal education settings
  • contribute to a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for visitors, volunteers, and staff
  • represent the Ontario Science Centre professionally at on-site and off-site programs, events and community activations

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • availability for a minimum of three (3) days per week, including at least one weekend day, for the duration of the contract
  • (only if you are applying to the bilingual position) possess written and oral French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.

Customer service skills

You can:

  • deliver welcoming, friendly, and engaging visitor experiences, particularly for children and families
  • share knowledge and enthusiasm for science, technology, creativity, and learning
  • facilitate experiences in making, tinkering, or creative environments
  • encourage exploration, play, and intergenerational learning
  • support imagination, role-play, investigation, experimentation, and hands-on discovery
  • bring experience in science, education, cultural, park, or maker/tinkering environments

Communication skills

You can:

  • communicate clearly and confidently with individuals and groups of various sizes and ages
  • adapt communication approaches to meet diverse learning needs, abilities, and cultural contexts
  • translate complex ideas into accessible, engaging, and meaningful experiences
  • present dynamic and interactive demonstrations or workshops
  • effectively engage young children and their caregivers

Leadership skills and teamwork skills

You have:

  • strong leadership, collaboration, and teamwork skills
  • flexibility, initiative, and the ability to multi-task
  • the ability to stay calm, professional, and visitor-focused in a fast-paced environment
  • awareness of accessibility and safety considerations, with the ability to adapt or escalate concerns appropriately
