The Position:

To support the SMUS community in formally introducing dance instruction, we are seeking a dynamic and collaborative dance teacher. Beginning in September 2026, this passionate and committed educator will work alongside an outstanding Arts team to build a dance program that inspires our students.

Formal instruction will take place after the regular school day and on weekends, with the goal of expanding the program to include curricular offerings over time. To support this growth, there will be regular opportunities to collaborate across all three school divisions and with the school’s musical productions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional teaching ability, strong choreography skills, and the capacity to inspire students as they develop their dance skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver engaging dance instruction.

  • Prepare students for a range of performances throughout the school year

  • Collaborate with fellow Arts educators (visual art, theatre and music) to support the arts generally and to plan performances as appropriate.

  • Collaborate with the Head of Theatre, and other colleagues in supporting the School’s annual musical at all three divisions as necessary.

  • Collaborate with departmental leaders to introduce dance instruction across the divisions where appropriate.

  • Work cross-departmentally to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices with school-wide goals.

  • Communicate regularly and professionally with students, colleagues, and families, fostering strong and supportive relationships.

  • Maintain consistent, ongoing assessment of student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback to students and their families.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree, with specialization and/or experience in dance and choreography, with expertise in dance education.

  • Eligible for, or holder of a current BC teaching certificate.

  • Demonstrated experience teaching, choreographing, and directing high school-level dance ensembles across a range of grades, levels (beginner to expert), and styles (jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, hip hop).

  • Knowledge and experience of diverse and developmentally appropriate dance repertoire relevant to high school dance teaching.

  • Experience in dance choreography for musical theatre productions.

  • The ability to create a culture of dance expression for students of various backgrounds and experience levels, creating engaging and well-paced lessons.

  • Experience using Google Classroom and other technology to support learning.

  • Growth mindset and ability to offer and receive professional feedback.

  • Experience working in an environment of excellence where a broad spectrum of programs operate simultaneously, demanding a great deal of forward planning and creativity.

  • Commitment to pastoral care and to delivering high quality education through a holistic lens.

Salary:

Annual salary range: $61,305 – $99,221. This range reflects the prorated (0.8 FTE) salary.

Criminal Record Check:

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
