About the role

At Loblaw Digital, we know that our customers expect the best from us. Whether that means building the best, most innovative online shopping experience, or designing an app that will impact the lives of people across the country, we’re up for the challenge. From our office in Downtown Toronto, we’ve created leading eCommerce experiences in the online grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces, and we’re only just getting started. Why is this role important? Product Design Lead, Engage Domain (18-month contract) At Loblaw Digital, we know that our customers expect the best from us. Whether that means building the most engaging online shopping experience, or designing an app that will impact the lives of people across the country, we’re up for the challenge. From our office in Downtown Toronto, we’ve created leading eCommerce experiences in the online grocery shopping, beauty, pharmacy, and apparel spaces, and we’re only just getting started. Why is this role important? As the Product Design Lead, Engage Domain, you will be responsible for partnering with Product, Tech and Research. You will focus on new features and optimizations for the eCommerce web and app journeys that happen before Checkout across Loblaw’s grocery banners (PC Express), Shoppers Drug Mart and Joe Fresh, reaching millions of Canadians weekly. Reporting to the Director of Product Design on a team of five designers, you’ll create solutions that make it easy for customers to discover value with confidence, build their carts quickly and shop the Loblaw ecosystem, wherever they are. You will work in a collaborative environment with a fantastic culture, partnering with team members across the organization to contribute to the overall success of Loblaw Digital, and our customers. This is a hands-on leadership role without direct people management responsibilities. The Design Lead will act as a multiplier for the Design organization by mentoring designers, raising the quality of design craft, strengthening our Design practice, and helping establish scalable ways of working across the portfolio. What you’ll do Problem Discovery, Definition & Goal Setting: You’ll collaborate with your team to ensure that problems, initiatives, and outcomes are well-defined and documented based on objective data. You’ll facilitate workshops to reach team alignment. AI-fluent Design Practice: You use AI as part of your design toolkit to accelerate delivery, synthesize inputs, explore ideas, and improve the quality of your work. You experiment with emerging tools while applying sound judgment, product taste and design craft. You implement AI-powered workflows to accelerate the input of the design team. Culture Contributor: You’ll help shape a strong, inclusive, and high-performing design culture at Loblaw Digital by modeling our values through how you collaborate, give feedback, and support others. As a visible leader within the UX Practice, you’ll foster the design culture and raise the bar for design quality, craft, and ways of working as the organization continues to grow. Mentor & Support a High Performing Team: Though no direct reports, you will be instrumental in building, mentoring and coaching the work of the team. You will help to recruit and hire a diverse and inclusive team, oversee and guide their work and coach them in their career development. You’ll encourage a magnetic culture of learning and humility within Loblaw Digital’s UX Practice (~60 total team members across Product Design and UX Research). Interaction Design: You know when and why to apply interaction design processes to achieve the right outcomes with your team. Your focus will be in the interplay between words, visuals, space, time, and behaviours of digital user interfaces. Your work product will include journey maps, service blueprints, information architecture, user flows, and wireframes. Art Direction & Visual Design: You’ll design the high-fidelity interfaces that we build. You understand how to convey visual personality, tone, look and feel, and the flourish that is appropriate to your product. Design Systems Thinking: You’ll ensure that design solutions utilize and further the team's design system, and leverage or iterate on existing patterns whenever possible. You’ll identify undefined or inconsistent patterns and propose scalable solutions. You’ll encourage and facilitate the shared naming of elements across design and development on the team. Design Research, Validation & Iteration: You’ll have access to existing data and research as well as the mandate to identify when primary research is needed. You’ll leverage a range of mixed-methods research tools and data to improve your work. You’ll track the performance of your work post-launch and continue to optimize based on data. Inclusive Design: You’ll ensure that our digital products can be experienced by everyone, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve. You have an applied understanding of AODA design requirements and can apply knowledge of inclusive design ‘grey areas’ that may not be legal requirements, but improve our digital products for everyone Does this sound like you? The Design Coach: You are passionate about helping other designers grow. You naturally coach through feedback, design critiques, mentorship, and thoughtful guidance, raising the quality of work across the team without needing formal people management responsibilities. You believe great design leaders multiply their impact by developing others. The Craft Leader: You set a high bar for design quality while balancing speed and pragmatism. You care deeply about interaction design, systems thinking, accessibility, and visual excellence, and you help teams make thoughtful design decisions that scale across products. You recognize opportunities to improve not only individual experiences, but the overall maturity of the Design practice. The AI-Native Product Designer: You are excited by the opportunity to rethink products and the design process in an AI-first world. Rather than treating AI as an isolated feature, you think about how agentic experiences, automation, human-in-the-loop interactions, and conversational workflows can help customers discover products, get value and checkout with ease. The Team Champion: You build trust with your team, partners, and stakeholders by leading with curiosity and empathy, treating them as equals, and setting and achieving shared outcomes. You are energized by sharing the value of our practice with our teams, teaching our ways of working, and elevating our team's profile within the UX community. The Critical Thinker: You ask questions to clarify ambiguous problems, and listen actively in order to understand opportunities to improve experiences and processes. You are resilient to change, invigorated by growth, and are constantly learning and challenging the norms around you. The Continuous Learner: You stay curious about emerging technologies, AI-native workflows, design systems, product strategy, and leadership. You invest in your own growth while helping others learn, creating an environment where experimentation, feedback, and continuous improvement become part of the team's culture. The Systems Builder: You improve how teams work—not just what they build. Whether through design standards, reusable frameworks, AI-enabled workflows, critiques, onboarding, or operating models, you're constantly looking for ways to make the Design organization more effective and scalable. Your qualifications should include: 7-10+ years of experience working as a designer on cross-functional teams releasing consumer experiences or enterprise products Demonstrated experience mentoring and coaching Product Designers, helping elevate design craft, systems thinking, and career development without direct people management responsibilities. Experience contributing to the growth of a Design organization through critiques, standards, onboarding, documentation, or design operations. A portfolio with recent case studies that demonstrate… Beautiful, accessible, scalable digital experiences that you have shipped. Your experience working in a cross-functional team in an agile environment working closely with Product, Tech and Design peers. Your approaches to problem framing and solutioning while balancing stakeholder needs and technical constraints. How you currently use AI tools and AI-powered workflows in your design work. Your ability to use design as a tool to uncover what questions to ask, what solutions to explore, and how to define and measure success. Experience partnering closely with Engineering throughout implementation, ensuring high-quality execution and successful delivery. Experience leading design across multiple products or product domains, creating consistency through shared interaction patterns, design principles, and scalable frameworks. The key performance indicators you used to measure the effectiveness of your solutions. How you have contributed to the design practice and/or team culture at an organization.

How You’ll Succeed: At Loblaw Digital, we seek great people to continually strengthen our culture. We believe great people model our values, are authentic, build trust and make connections.
