Job Summary
The Team
The City Wide Intake Team is a frontline team that serves as the first point of contact for child protection concerns, making it ideal for applicants who are skilled in assessment, decision-making, and fast-paced work. The team consists of seven intake workers and one social program officer assistant and was established in 2021, making it a relatively new but well-established and evolving team. Team members work closely with Provincial Centralized Screening, After Hours staff, and other child protection, family service, and youth teams across Kamloops. Their work has a significant impact by ensuring timely, thorough safety assessments and connecting children, youth, and families to appropriate supports. This team is appreciated for it's strong collaboration across shifts, supportive environment, and the opportunity it provides to build broad knowledge, relationships, and skills across multiple service areas.
The Role
The Child Protection Workers, After Hours Response (7 on/7 off) provides urgent support to families during crisis. They assess reports of child abuse or neglect, speak with parents and children, and work with other agencies to make sure children are safe. This position responsibilities include safety checks, developing and updating family plans, and taking action when protection is needed.
This fast-paced role brings new challenges each shift, requiring you to work independently, handle complex situations, and respond effectively in crises.
After Hours Response shifts are as follows:

7 days on, 7 days off, beginning on Friday (Friday – Thursday)

Friday: 3:30pm – 1:30am

Saturday & Sunday: 12:00pm – 12:00am

Monday – Thursday: 3:30pm – 12:30am

Shift work including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
1. Preferred Credentials:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Work or in Child & Youth Care OR Master's Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology/Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with completion of a practicum in family and child welfare OR
- In-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who have a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA) OR
- A candidate may be considered equivalent when they are registered and a member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or has a letter from the College confirming that their application for registration has been approved.
- NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a comprehensive report and the MCFD supplemental report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.
2. Expanded Credentials:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field OR Bachelor’s Degree with a Major/Honors in a Human Services field OR Master’s level graduate Certificate/Diploma in a Human Services field AFTER the completion of an unrelated Bachelor’s Degree.
- PLUS, a minimum of one year of related OR job-specific work experience.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a basic report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.
Human Services fields include: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology or Nursing.
Additional Requirements:

Minimum one (1) year of Child Protection experience.

Must currently hold or be immediately eligible to obtain full (C6) delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).

Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

Preferred education credentials AND/OR in-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who hold a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).

Recent work experience (within last five years) in Child Protection.

Two (2) or more years of Child Protection experience.

A Child Welfare Specialization from an accredited British Columbia university and who have completed their practicum in a child welfare setting.

Experience working with Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).

Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until December 30, 2026 that may be extended. Board and lodging and relocation expenses do not apply.
This position has full time on-site requirements.
