RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Introduction

Medicine / Respiratory Epidemiology

A full-time position for a postdoctoral research fellow is available in the laboratory of Dr. Benjamin M. Smith, at the Research Institute of McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada. Research in the Smith lab uses large and deeply phenotyped cohort data to identify, understand, and target mechanisms of chronic obstructive lung disease susceptibility across the life course. This position is specifically focused on advancing our understanding why some people are more susceptible to incidident lung disease and disease progression than others. The lab uses high-quality data from multiple large cohorts including standardized questionnaires, functional measures (e.g. spirometry), environmental exposure measures (e.g., air pollutants), imaging (e.g., CT scans), multi-omics, and clinical events (e.g., hospitalization, death). Dr. Smith trained and practices respiratory medicine and epidemiology. He serves as the Director of the McGill Department of Medicine Division Clinical Epidemiology, and the Research Institute’s Centre for Outcomes Research and Evalaution. His research program is integrated with several national and international collaborators.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a PhD in Epidemiology or a related field. The incumbent will have proven ability to think critically and creatively, work independently with large cohort datasets, including develop and execute (i.e., code) data analysis plans, ensure cohort data security requirements are respected, report scientific findings, and provide assistance and guidance to junior trainees in the lab.

Responsabilities And Objectives

Develop and execute hypotheses tests using appropriate epidemiological and biostatistical methods. Meet regularly with supervisor to develop ideas, troubleshoot analyses and discuss results. Author abstracts and manuscripts related to research findings. Mentor junior trainees in the lab. Ensure cohort data access requirements are respected.

Education: Doctorate Degree

Field of study: Epidemiology or related field

Other education considered an asset for this position: Familiarity with causal theory and methods

Required Skills

Knowledge of French is required. An intermediate knowledge of oral English and an advanced knowledge of written English are required, as the position requires regular and complex contact with researchers or international students who are exclusively proficient in English. The position also requires complex writing or in-depth analysis of documents in English related to a research project. Proficiency in coding large dataset manipulation and statistical analysis (e.g., in R), Familiarity with causal theory and methods.

Compensation level: Stipend

Work schedule: Other: The weekly distribution of time and location of work (on-site vs. remote) is flexible, provided that expected productivity is maintained. An average weekly on-site presence of at least 3 days per week is expected, as the lab values in-person formal and informal scientific exchanges and team building.

A Postdoctoral fellow is a full-time student currently enrolled in a Canadian University program. The individual must have recently been awarded (within 5 years) a PhD or equivalent. The Postdoctoral fellow will receive a stipend or a bursary from a professor’s grant for research activities that will be performed on a full-time basis. All benefits are administered by the University under which they are registered.
