Position Summary:
Facilitate, coordinate, enhance and promote the highest ethical standards in research involving human participants. Administer the ethics application submission and review process. Prepare and disseminate agenda, minutes, documents.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administers the submission, review, revision and approval process of research proposals involving human participants in the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, engineering, and health and biomedical sciences.
  • Ensures all review actions such as delegated reviews, amendments and renewals are tracked and reported to the REB.
  • Coordinates the activities of four (4) Research Ethics Board (REBs) and subcommittees as needed.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of operating procedures for the REBs.
  • Provides support to REB Chairs and members.
  • Applies regulations and policies governing human participant research and participates in ensuring the University, the REBs and researchers are compliant.
  • Identifies issues and makes recommendations for guidelines and policies.
  • Organizes REB meetings for each REB. Develops meeting agenda and materials for distribution. Takes minutes and prepares review letters for researchers.
  • Administers the delegated review process including the pre-determination of review level and assignment of reviewers in consultation with supervisor and/or Chair as required.
  • Assists in the preparation of ethics review letters for researchers.
  • Provides information to researchers on the preparation of proposals.
  • Assists researchers in responding to REB review queries.
  • Assesses modifications submitted, follows-up with researchers on incomplete responses and verifies submissions for final approval in consultation with supervisor and/or REB Chair as required.
  • Pre-reviews all submissions to ensure completeness of required information.
  • Inputs and ensures the correctness of information into appropriate software systems.
  • Generates statistics and reports as required.
  • Liaises with internal departments and external agencies.
  • Attends meetings and conferences as required.
  • Provide backup for other team members, participate in projects and performs other duties as required.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • DEC or bachelor’s degree in social sciences, health sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience in a research setting is a very strong asset.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to work in a fast-paced office environment with time-critical deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Experience in taking notes and minutes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French.
  • Proven customer service skills to ensure the highest level of service to the research community.
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access – web and desktop). Specific knowledge of McGill administrative systems (ex. Banner, Minerva, InfoEd) an asset.
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures related to human ethics and familiarity with fields relevant to research with human participants are a strong asset.
  • Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex information clearly, concisely, and accurately to academic audiences. A self-directed team player who is eager to learn and expand skillsets.
