Quaternary Geologist - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is recruiting for a Quaternary Geologist to join a talented group of geoscientists within the Groundwater Geoscience Team. As a Quaternary Geologist, this position is expected to produce near-surface stratigraphic models for the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) project. The goals of the SAGE project are to identify favourable groundwater locations for users seeking alternative water supply; quantify potential effects of allocating groundwater on surface water availability in regions where high-water demand is forecasted; and improve access to groundwater data to streamline and inform regulatory decisions. You will provide a major contribution to the mapping and stratigraphic understanding of Alberta’s Quaternary sediments and will inform the work of multidisciplinary teams to report on the quality, quantity and location of groundwater across southern Alberta.

This information will enable more effective and efficient regulatory decisions on applications to access groundwater and help inform monitoring programs to ensure sustainable use and resiliency of Alberta’s groundwater resources. You will fill an important role in our project team focused on disseminating groundwater data and geoscience products to decision-makers, water licence-holders, and rural/urban municipalities through publications and web-hosted interactive applications.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Apply geological principals and independent judgement, incorporating a thorough knowledge of near-surface geological processes, to map the Neogene-Quaternary stratigraphy of southern Alberta for purposes of groundwater resource evaluation.
  • Build 3D Neogene-Quaternary geological models across an area of approximately 5000 km2 using Seequent Leapfrog Works. These models will be used to delineate probable coarse grained geobodies that may function as aquifers.
  • Identify and model the subsurface distribution of Quaternary stratigraphic units and the bedrock unconformity utilizing field observations and well data, including core, water well records, geophysical logs and geophysical survey data where available.
  • Disseminate information and knowledge in geological maps and reports that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the AGS and the AER.
  • Collaborate with hydrogeologists to incorporate geological data, mapped surfaces, and models into conceptual and numerical groundwater models.
  • Organize and assist in field work programs as required including water well drilling and geological outcrop section logging.
  • Interact with peers in universities and provincial government departments.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Post- graduate degree in Geology, or geoscience-related discipline.
  • 5-7 years of relevant industry, academia, or government geoscience experience.
  • Experience building high resolution geological models in the sediments above bedrock and utilizing the extent of surficial geological materials with Quaternary stratigraphic units to produce an integrated geological model will be expected.
  • Experience with geophysical log interpretation, particularly related to Quaternary sediments and underlying bedrock units as well as applying geological knowledge to issues related to groundwater is advantageous.
  • Experience with using ArcGIS (for generating cross-sections, structure maps and isopach maps) and geological modelling software such as Leapfrog or Petrel is preferred.
  • Geology fieldwork experience including efficient collection of accurate field data meanwhile prioritizing safety.
  • Experience mapping surficial geology is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply creative thinking to resolve complex issues.
  • Demonstrated high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, ideally supported by published works or contributions.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • Pre-placement Medical required.
  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.
  • Required physical demands: e.g., must be able to lift over 30 lbs
  • Additional training if required or provided: e.g., First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training
  • Monthly travel is required for meetings held in Red Deer or Edmonton, Alberta.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Great benefits from your first day of work
  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours
  • Edmonton: Hybrid work - employees located in Edmonton will work in office two days per week
  • All other locations: Hybrid work - employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week
  • Defined benefit pension plan(s)
  • Flexible benefits program options, including Personal & Health spending account(s)
  • Generous vacation entitlement and flex days
