PositionOverview

The Nisga'a School District is seeking a Literacy & Numeracy Teacher Mentor to serve as a hands-on instructional leader. Grounded in relationship-centered practice, this role focuses on side-by-side coaching and live modeling to bridge the gap between curriculum and the classroom. The role primarily supports foundational literacy and numeracy instruction, while responding flexibly to school and district priorities.

Working directly in the learning environment, the Teacher Mentor supports reconciliation and student wellbeing by co-planning, demonstrating lessons, and building the collective capacity of educators. Through a cycle of active partnership, this role ensures responsive, high-quality instruction. This work honours learner identity, language, and community context, and supports equitable access to high‑quality literacy and numeracy instruction. This is an itinerant position that requires regular travel between schools.

KeyResponsibilities

  • Instructional**Coaching****& **Mentorship
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to plan, model, and co-teach lessons focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Observe lessons and provide non-evaluative, constructive feedback to support professional growth.
  • Help new teachers orient to school routines, diverse student needs, and effective classroom management strategies.
  • Provide instructional coaching and mentorship in a non‑evaluative, collaborative role, focused on professional growth and instructional improvement.
  • Professional**Learning****& **Leadership
  • Facilitate school and district-level workshops and "Pro-D" (Professional Development) activities.
  • Lead teacher inquiry groups, communities of practice, or professional book studies to stay current on the latest educational research and best practices.
  • Curate and maintain an "idea bank" or digital resource hub of instructional materials and tools.
  • Collaborate with school and district leadership to support consistent, effective literacy and numeracy practices across classrooms and schools.

  • Support teachers in using district-approved assessment tools to guide instructional practice.
  • Assist in analyzing student achievement data to develop targeted intervention strategies for at-risk learners.
  • Collaborate with school-based teams to implement individualized support plans (e.g., IEPs).

RequiredQualifications

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligibility)
  • Legally permitted to work in Canada
  • Significant (often 5+ years) successful classroom teaching experience, particularly with vulnerable or diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of the BC Curriculum, including learning standards and core competencies
  • Completion of a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership or related graduate degree is preferred
  • Training and experience in inclusive education or learner support services
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence and ability to travel between schools within the district

PreferredAttributes

  • Deep knowledge of curriculum frameworks and research-based instructional practices (e.g., the Science of Reading, play-based learning).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills for effective peer mentoring.
  • Proficiency in integrating educational technology (e.g., Google Workspace, digital assessment tools) into teaching.
  • Strong assessment, planning, and problem-solving skills to support individualized learning and intervention.
  • Flexibility in adapting mentoring stances (coach, or collaborator) based on the teacher's specific needs.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioural, and social-emotional learning needs.
  • Ability to collaborate with classroom teachers to support instructional and co-teaching practices.
  • Commitment to teamwork, ongoing professional learning, and reflective practice
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries while working closely with colleagues.
