Lead the charge in urban restoration as a Landscape Technician I on our Naturalization team! This high-impact role places you at the intersection of field work, technical planning, and community engagement, directly driving the Naturalization initiatives and the Greener As We Grow strategy.

As a Landscape Technician I, you will apply your expertise to scout potential sites, develop detailed planting plans based on plant physiology, and ground truth site conditions to advise on suitability. Your technical knowledge will be vital for managing contracts, coordinating work to City standards, and creating and updating geospatial maps of assets using ArcGIS software.

What will you do?

  • Perform site assessments for planting planning, including selecting naturalization sites, performing ground truthing and utility checks, and developing detailed planting plans and maps
  • Coordinate contract work, including supervising maintenance and planting, and ensuring conformance to City standards
  • Create and update geospatial maps of naturalization assets using ArcGIS software and applications
  • Communicate with residents and stakeholders by responding to 311 inquiries, providing education on Naturalization Initiatives, and supporting communications for the Greener As We Grow strategy
  • Prepare and participate in season start ups, site meetings and planting demonstrations
  • Monitor naturalization assets by assessing plant health and coordinating plant inventory with the City nursery
  • Ensure operational compliance by developing and updating Standard Operating Procedures and Hazard Assessments
  • Support data and research needs by performing data analysis, drafting reports and presentations
  • Determine optimal tree and shrub species for planting based on rigorous, site-specific ecological assessments

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year technology diploma with an Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Environmental Sciences or Landscape Architecture focus or a related field.
  • 2 years of experience in landscaping, urban forest management, restoration or reclamation, contract and/or specification writing and interpretation of landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned.

Assets:

  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s Native species

Skills required for Success:

  • Ability to interpret landscape contracts/specifications
  • Knowledge of methods and standards common to contract specifications and implementations
  • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of best practices in naturalization, restoration and/or reclamation
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and experience in responding to public inquiries
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, including but not limited to Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google MyMaps, and Google Maps
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to work out-of-doors for extended periods and in unfavourable weather conditions as required by the work assigned
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform light to medium manual labour, such as carrying minimal equipment to and from various worksites
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates must arrange their own transportation, to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
