We are looking for an enthusiastic, curious, and adaptable Athletic Therapist to join our Upper School Health Centre Department. Responsibilities include providing support for the Head Athletic Therapist in assisting with the coverage of U15 hockey games.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
- Responsible for providing game coverages:
- For hockey, a high-impact contact sports (*an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys field work);
- Reports to the Head Athletic Therapist and corresponds with Coaches, and Athletic Director on a regular basis.
On-field Coverage:
- Provide ‘on-site’ and ‘on-field’ coverage during U15 hockey games - be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends (as required);
- Pre-game taping and post-game injury care.
On-field/SIdeline Treatment and Care - Athletic event coverages:
- Provide initial on-field first-aid, immediate/emergency care and management of acute injuries, including concussions:
- Provide sideline concussion assessment (SCAT test) on players suspected of sustaining/suffering a concussion in the game;
- Use of good judgment and quick decision making with regards to safe return to play;
- Provide first-aid and emergency care for visiting school teams/athletes without a team therapist.
Travel with U15 Hockey team
- Accompany the high risk U15 hockey teams during travel to away games and tournaments;
- Able to travel domestically and internationally as needed (*frequent travel, single and/or multiple day travel);
- Ensure athletes' health and safety during away games and tournaments.
Concussion Care:
- Assessment (SCAT test), immediate care and management of suspected concussions (*including referrals to appropriate healthcare providers (ie: Dr’s) when necessary, for further medical assessment/diagnosis and final return-to-play clearance;
- Oversee students through the(ir) concussion 'return-to-play’ protocol;
- Maintain up-to-date student concussion recovery/management documentation;
- Regular correspondence with Head Athletic Therapist, UCC Health Center and Coaches regarding the student/athlete’s concussion, recovery process and return-to-play status.
Administrative Duties and Record-keeping Maintenance:
- Maintenance of up-to-date records, files and clinic’s daily log;
- Maintain proper, legible/clear and accurate documentation of injuries sustained (musculoskeletal and concussions), assessments, treatments and progress in a timely manner;
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations;
- Coordinate referrals to external healthcare providers (when necessary) for further medical assessment/diagnosis and treatment options.
Communication, Collaboration and Updates:
- Correspond regularly with and keep Head Athletic Therapist and Coaches informed regarding player injuries (musculoskeletal and concussions), recovery progress and playing status;
- Maintain open and effective communication with athletes, coaches, therapy staff, UCC Health Center staff and parents (as needed);
- Collaborate with coaches and other sports staff (ie: strength and conditioning staff) to ensure a coordinated approach to athlete care and performance;
- Communicate effectively during emergencies with relevant staff (ie: Security, CIRT), coaches, medical professionals (ie:EMS) and parents (as needed.
Job Requirements
Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:
- Undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree (or Diploma) in Athletic Therapy from an accredited Athletic Therapy program;
- Certified Athletic Therapist CAT(C) in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association (CATA);
- Valid CPR/AED-BLS (Basic Life Support) and First Responder certifications;
- Minimum of 2-3 yrs. experience in the field of Athletic Therapy, preferably within both clinical and field settings (with familiarity working with high-risk contact sport teams, such as hockey;
- Hockey Canada Trainers Certification;
- Ability to work in both clinical and field settings (including with high-risk contact sports);
- Familiarity working with and treating adolescent athletes/students (aged 10-19);
- Strong injury assessment and treatment skills, knowledge of rehabilitation techniques, therapeutic modality application (ie: U/S, IFC, NMES, TENS, thermotherapy, cryotherapy), emergency care and taping techniques;
- Strong working knowledge of the different therapeutic and exercise techniques used in treating and rehabilitating injured athletes;
- Strong on-field injury management skills;
- Experience with concussion (SCAT) assessments and management, including return-to-play management;
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and strong interpersonal skills;
- Energetic, self-motivated, takes initiative;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Able to deal appropriately with a high volume of patients (athletes, students);
- Ability to communicate effectively and work in a collaborative manner with other Athletic Therapists, AT student therapists, Health Center staff, athletes, coaches and parents (if required);
- Documentation and maintenance of up-to-date patient records done in a timely manner;
- Strong organizational and time-management skills;
- Able to multi-task and triage multiple injuries at a time;
- Ability to use good judgement and make quick decisions with regards to safe return to play;
- Must be dependable, accountable and flexible with scheduling, as work hours are determined by athletic program needs/schedules - including evenings, weekends, and single to multiple day team travel (as required).
