Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Mike Petryk School of Dentistry invites applications for a part-time (three days per week), non-tenure track faculty position in the Dental Hygiene Program in the discipline of Comprehensive Care. The position has an anticipated start date of August 24, 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for clinical teaching at the undergraduate level. The initial assignment for this position will be as a Comprehensive Care (CC) DH Lead.

Working for the School of Dentistry

The Dental Hygiene Program in the School of Dentistry is proud to be situated at the University of Alberta in the Kaye Edmonton Clinic Oral Health Clinic, with community partners around Edmonton and its surrounding areas and across Alberta.

Position Summary

The Comprehensive Care (CC) DH Lead has a key role of clinical instructor, student mentor and manager of Dental Hygiene (DH) students within the CC team.

Direct reporting of the overall academic appointment is to the Chair, School of Dentistry; however, delegated authority is given to the Associate Chair & Program Director, Dental Hygiene, for the purposes of planning, delivering and evaluating the dental hygiene clinical program.

In addition, the CC DH Lead interacts closely with the:

  • Dental Hygiene Comprehensive Care Director
  • DH Clinical Course Coordinators to coordinate efforts to ensure the treatment needs of dental hygiene patients and the clinical experiences of DH students are met; to communicate any student professionalism or clinical progress concerns; to advise on clinical competence for DH II, III and IV students; to mitigate patient care issues related to dental hygiene care as they present within the team.
  • CC Director to communicate overall student and patient experience as well as overall efficiency and productivity of the team.
  • CC DDS Lead to collaborate on day-to-day patient care.
  • Part-time dental hygiene instructors teaching with the team; to consult on and identify student challenges; to provide support and mentorship.
  • Support staff, including the clerk within the Team.

A. Teaching

  • Provides clinical supervision, instruction and evaluation of DH students assigned to the team
  • Ensures DH students have a positive and supportive clinical learning environment
  • Ensures the core values of comprehensive care are practiced at the Oral Health Clinic
  • Attends and teaches clinics as assigned
  • Oversees medical consults for DH students in consultation with the CC DDS Lead
  • Provides remediation for DH students within the CC team
  • Consults with the designated Treatment Coordinator regarding case assignment and distribution using the dental hygiene dashboard
  • Reviews radiology reports with the DH student

B. Administration

  • Monitors student experiences; communicates with the treatment coordinator within the Team to oversee patient referrals and treatment needs
  • Oversees and approves chart audits for DH students
  • Reviews or evaluates clinical course assignments as assigned
  • Oversees and approves radiology reports for DH students
  • Meets regularly with the Dental Hygiene Clinical team
  • Collaborates with other CC Team DH Leads, CC DDS Leads, CC Directors, Discipline Instructors (specialists) and part-time clinical instructors to monitor student clinical progress
  • Advises the appropriate DH Clinical Year Course Coordinator regarding dental hygiene students clinical concerns
  • Attends Clinical Dental Hygiene Instructor meetings

C. Patient Care

  • Works with the CC DDS Leads to ensure that the dental treatment needs of patients are being met

  • Diploma or Bachelor of Sciences in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution, with the minimum level of education being a Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Must be eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists (ACDH).

  • At least five (5) years of experience as a clinical registered dental hygienist

  • Authorized under the Advanced Restricted Activities roster to deliver local anaesthesia

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience is an asset, as well as authorization under other Advanced Restricted Activities roster.
