Reporting to the Supervisor, Cultural Development, or designate, the Cultural Development Assistant will be responsible for providing administrative support for programs & services in the Business and Economic Development Services Branch, specifically the Events & Culture Division. This position provides administrative support with the planning and delivery of services, programs, events and projects related to Culture Counts: Oshawa’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan and the Public Art Master Plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of Culture programs and activities
  • Attend City produced events and activities and provide assistance with the delivery of each program
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of community engagement programs
  • Represent the City at third party events
  • Provide administrative support and perform clerical functions
  • Support marketing and promotion of programs and initiatives
  • Assist with monitoring program budgets
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Completion of a college diploma in Arts Administration, Museums and Heritage, or Public Administration, or a university degree, with preference for a degree in Visual Art, Art History, Cultural Studies, Cultural Planning, Arts Administration, Museums & Heritage, History, Public Administration, or Economic Development, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in the arts and culture field, with at least one (1) year in a municipal environment
  • One (1) year of customer service experience
  • Possess Standard First Aid & CPR Level C and AED certification
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
  • Advanced interpersonal and customer service skills to effectively collaborate with a broad range of staff, community organizations and the general public
  • Proficient organization skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure, meet tight deadlines and navigate difficult situations
  • Excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills to understand and formulate responses to complex issues
  • Strong conflict resolution skills ensuring effective resolution of challenging situations
  • Ability to exercise discretion, tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work irregular shifts, including evenings, holidays, and weekends
  • Ability to provide own transportation as required
  • Meet the eligibility requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs program:
    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
