IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY Interim Chief Executive Officer Reports to: Board Location: Kitchener, ON (Hybrid) Duration: 6 Month Hybrid
Our client, a well-established, community-based not-for-profit organization, is seeking an Interim Chief Executive Officer to provide executive leadership during a period of transition.
This is not a caretaker mandate. The Board is seeking a seasoned interim leader to stabilize, assess, and reposition the organization—balancing day-to-day operational stewardship with a forward-looking transformation agenda. The mandate will ultimately prepare the organization for the successful onboarding of a permanent CEO.
The Mandate Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Interim CEO will operate as a trusted advisor, change agent, and organizational stabilizer, with a dual focus:
Executive Stewardship Provide visible, credible leadership across the organization, ensuring continuity of operations, culture, and stakeholder confidence Maintain organizational performance across programs, fundraising, stakeholder engagement, and community presence Partner closely with the Board to ensure sound governance, transparency, and alignment on priorities Act as the primary spokesperson, sustaining strong relationships with donors, partners, government stakeholders, and the broader community Ensure continued compliance with regulatory, financial, and operational requirements
Strategic Assessment and Transformation Conduct a rapid but thoughtful assessment of the current state across strategy, operating model, financial sustainability, and organizational effectiveness Evaluate the leadership team and broader talent base, identifying strengths, gaps, and development opportunities Identify opportunities for revenue diversification, partnership development, and operational improvement Provide the Board with clear, objective insights and actionable recommendations on the organization’s future positioning Refresh or refine the strategic plan, ensuring alignment with evolving community needs and financial realities Lead and support the early implementation of priority changes to improve performance and organizational resilience
Capital Campaign & Fundraising Leadership A critical component of the mandate will be to strengthen and help steer a significant fundraising agenda, including oversight and advancement of a capital campaign. Provide executive leadership to an existing or emerging capital campaign, ensuring clarity of case for support, governance structure, and execution discipline Partner with the Board and campaign leadership to recalibrate strategy where required, including campaign readiness, target setting, and donor segmentation Actively engage in donor relationship management, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors and institutional partners Support and, where appropriate, lead key donor conversations, bringing credibility and confidence during a period of leadership transition Strengthen the organization’s overall fundraising capability, including team structure, performance expectations, and pipeline management Identify opportunities to diversify revenue streams, expand partnerships, and enhance long-term financial sustainability Ensure alignment between the strategic plan and fundraising narrative, reinforcing a compelling and fundable vision for the organization Provide the Board with clear visibility into campaign progress, risks, and required interventions
Key Priorities Stabilize and align the leadership team during a period of uncertainty Strengthen internal culture, engagement, and accountability Enhance stakeholder confidence and external reputation Clarify strategic direction and establish a credible forward plan Create a strong, well-documented platform for the incoming permanent CEO, including clear priorities, team assessment, and execution roadmap
Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be an experienced interim or transformation-oriented CEO-level executive, ideally with exposure to complex, multi-stakeholder environments in a not-for-profit organization.
They will bring: A track record of leading through transition, ambiguity, and change Strong experience in strategy development and execution, organizational assessment, and transformation Depth in board engagement and governance, with the judgment to balance support and challenge Demonstrated ability to assess and strengthen leadership teams, including coaching and performance management Commercial acumen, including financial oversight and revenue development Highly developed stakeholder management, communications, and public-facing credibility A leadership style that is transparent, pragmatic, and engaging, with the ability to quickly build trust and alignment
