The Town of East Gwillimbury is currently searching for enthusiastic and dedicated Swim Instructors to staff our Health & Active Living Plaza during the fall season. Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator and under the supervision of the Head Instructor Guards, Swim Instructors are an integral part of the Recreation and Culture Division. We are currently looking for Swim Instructors to teach swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. Daytime, evening and weekend shifts will be available.

Responsibilities:

• Plan, organize, and deliver high-quality, safe, inclusive, and stimulating swimming lessons for all ages, following the Swim for Life Program and Swim Patrol standard.

• Communicate with participants and parents regarding program expectations, water safety, program information, and accident prevention.

• Perform minor equipment and pool area maintenance including set-up and clean-up of pool, pool deck and changeroom area. Ensure instructional and aquatic safety equipment is stored safely in designated areas.

• Report all concerns, accidents and incidents to the Head Instructor Guard and/or Aquatic Coordinator for follow-up and appropriate action(s).

• Maintain a friendly, inclusive, accessible, and engaging aquatic environment.

• Complete administrative tasks such as attendance, worksheets, lesson plans and progress reports.

• Supervise volunteers and participants, ensuring their safety.

• Respond to emergency situations and perform First Aid and/or arrange for emergency services as needed.

• Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.

• Attend regularly scheduled in-service training programs and meetings, maintain certifications, skills and fitness levels.

• Staff must be proficient in National Lifeguard physical standards and rescue skills, and the ability to adapt techniques to meet specific facility requirements.

*Note: All work activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety Policies and Procedures. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

Position Requirements:

• Must be 15 years of age.

• Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor (LSSI) Certification.

• Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving (LSI) and Emergency First Aid Instructor (EFAI) Certification.

• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification (from Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol or St. John’s Ambulance).

• Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (NL) (Considered an Asset).

• Additional examiner and instructor certifications (Considered an Asset).

• High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development (Considered an Asset).

• Staff must be proficient in Swim for Life Level 6 strokes, skills and endurance, as well as Lifesaving Bronze skills and rescue techniques, with the ability to adapt techniques to meet specific facility requirements.

• Post Secondary education within Recreation and Leisure, Education and Development or a related field (Considered an asset).

• Experience within Aquatics, Recreation and Leisure, Education and Development or a related field (Considered an asset).

• Excellent customer service skills.

• Previous experience planning and implementing program plans (Considered an asset).

• Due to the nature of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) satisfactory to the Town (Those 17 Years & Older) or the completion of Declaration of Minors – Working with Vulnerable Individuals Self Declaration Form (Those 16 Years and Younger) is required.
