This role centers on designing a premium saree collection that revitalizes the historic Jamdani supplementary weft weaving technique. The designer will collaborate directly with master weavers from renowned Jamdani clusters, integrating contemporary geometric motifs and modern color palettes while respecting the heritage of this UNESCO-recognized craft. The project emphasizes transforming traditional floral patterns into minimalist, geometric designs suited for today’s market, and exploring innovative fabric structures through the use of diverse yarn blends such as cotton, mulmul, muslin, and linen. The ideal candidate will bring a balance of creative vision and technical expertise to bridge tradition with modern aesthetics.

Deliverables

Develop original saree designs featuring contemporary geometric motifs inspired by classic Jamdani patterns Create detailed design specifications and color palettes for each piece Collaborate with master weavers to ensure accurate translation of designs into woven samples Experiment with various yarn blends to achieve unique fabric textures and finishes Oversee sampling process and provide feedback for refinement Document design process and maintain clear communication with artisan teams

Requirements

Proven experience in textile or fashion design, with a strong portfolio of handloom or heritage textile projects Deep understanding of Jamdani weaving techniques and Indian textile traditions Proficiency in design software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar) Strong sense of color theory, pattern development, and fabric construction Ability to work collaboratively with artisans and adapt designs based on technical feedback Excellent communication and project management skills Availability for remote collaboration, with occasional on-site visits to weaving clusters preferred
