Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator, the Cultural Arts Instructor will develop and deliver engaging art-based programs and workshops that explore and celebrate the artistic traditions of diverse culture(s), including the following artistic modalities:  

• Visual Arts (e.g. Painting, Drawing, Calligraphy, Textiles, Mixed Media, etc.) 
• Crafting (e.g. Basketweaving, Woodcarving, Sculpture-making, Beading, Sewing, Clay-molding, etc.) 
• Performance Arts (e.g. Drama, Theater, Spoken Word, Storytelling, etc.) 
• Poetry Creative Writing (e.g. poetry, memoir, short story, etc.) 
• Any additional creative art modalities not included here.  

We are particularly looking for instructors with experience in culturally specific art traditions within the modalities mentioned above. Some examples include but are not limited to:  Indigenous basketweaving, Indigenous beading, African drumming, Afro contemporary arts, Queer Art Aesthetics, Chinese calligraphy, Origami, Crafting Mandalas, Shibori tie-dying, and more.  If your specialty of culturally specific art tradition(s) is not included here, we still encourage you to apply! 

Key Responsibilities include: 

• Plan and lead instructional art programs in a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment.
• Set up and clean up of supplies and materials needed for the program. 
• Work with Coordinators to order required supplies to deliver art program.
• Complete class certificates and achievement awards if necessary.   
• Provide adaptations and modifications to planned exercises/techniques and/or available equipment where appropriate. 
• Effectively communicate with participants and their parents/guardians, addressing any questions, concerns, complaints, or suggestions about the program, and pass on any relevant information to the Recreation Coordinator. 
• Complete administrative tasks as assigned. 

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Experience planning and leading classes or workshops in the culturally specific art modality/modalities in which the candidate specializes. 
• Deep knowledge and understanding of the culture(s) or cultural themes of the art modalities in which the candidate specializes. This may be demonstrated through lived experience, academic study, extensive research, job experience, or close ties to the community.  
• Proven experience in teaching, presenting, or facilitating cultural learning experiences is highly desirable. 
• Experience working with all age groups, preferably in a recreational setting.
• Strong customer service, oral and written communication and presentation skills.   
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills.  
• Ability to deal effectively and politely with individuals and groups of all ages/skills, staff, parents, program participants and the public. 
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.  
• Patient, enthusiastic, and positive attitude.  
• Ability to engage and connect with diverse audiences. 
• Ability to create an inclusive, equitable, and safe spaces.
• Ability to adapt programming for people with disabilities is an asset.
• Availability/flexibility to work daytime, evenings, and weekends.  
• HIGH FIVE: Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (Considered an asset). 
• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C certificate or willing to obtain prior to employment. 
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required. 

Hourly Rate: $28.14 - $56.77
