The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a charity offering opportunities for personal growth, community involvement and leadership. Our full service health and fitness centres across the Greater Toronto Area provide a variety of health, fitness, recreation and community programs to thousands of members, including children, youth and adults, who represent the diversity of Greater Toronto and its communities.
In these roles, you will:
Program Representative Adult Rec Sports Responsibilities:
- Manage game play of various recreational sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, floor hockey, and squash, ensuring fair play, safety, and adherence to rules.
- Ensure a warm, friendly, clean, and safe environment is provided, delivering outstanding service.
- Deliver programs that align with the mission, values, goals, and practices of the YMCA of Greater Toronto, while building positive relationships.
- Monitor the safety of all activities and programs, responding immediately to rectify any safety concerns.
- Continuously build relationships with members, staff, volunteers, and community partners, assisting in coaching and developing community members, enhancing skills and addressing weaknesses.
- Actively participate in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
- Collaborate with program members, volunteers, and staff, encouraging and assisting program members to access additional appropriate programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Program Representative Individual Conditioning Responsibilities:
- Deliver programs and assist participants in the individual conditioning area, focusing on building and facilitating relationships.
- Provide overall support to Member experience in Conditioning areas (including Membership Plus if applicable) as needed, ensure workout areas are maintained, and respond to member requests or concerns.
- Help members achieve their personal health and fitness-related goals by referring them to various programs and services as appropriate (e.g., mYfitness, Personal Training).
- Provide information about other YMCA areas and programs, such as group fitness classes, sports, children’s programs, or other services in the building (Employment, Childcare) or assist members in finding answers to questions by referring them to correct sources.
- Clean and maintain equipment during shifts and report any repairs or work orders to the supervisor.
- Conduct Program area counts or inventory checks as required.
- Adhere to Priority S.A.M. and Workplace Health & Safety standards, specifically focusing on the Conditioning and Free Weights areas.
- Actively participate in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
- In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers, and YMCA program staff, assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
- Perform other related duties to fulfill commitment to quality programs for all members as assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Instructor Group Fitness Adult Programs Responsibilities:
- Provide direct program leadership to group fitness classes, including CardioFit, Bootcamp, CycleFit, BodyFit, etc.
- Learn and perform YMCA pre-choreography programs in Arriba, Barre, MuscleFit, and Aquafit as needed.
- Deliver programs in a manner that meets the Mission, Vision, values, goals, and practices of the YMCA of Greater Toronto, including Priority Sam Standards.
- Develop rapport with volunteer and other staff group fitness instructors, building positive relationships.
- Ensure provision of outstanding programs for all members in a warm, friendly, clean, and safe environment; clean group fitness equipment after each class and identify maintenance and repairs needed for equipment to supervisor.
- Follow YMCA Group Fitness Best Practices as outlined by Priority S.A.M.
- Take attendance and/or record participation numbers when required.
- Recruit and mentor volunteer instructors for the Group Fitness Program.
- Participate on a collaborative and supportive staff team, working with colleagues to ensure scheduled classes are delivered.
- Actively participate in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events.
- Organize and administer a case management approach in managing relationships with new members, ensuring they are comfortable and successful in the program to assist them in achieving their personal health goals.
- Ensure qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.
- Assist and encourage program members, in collaboration with program volunteers and YMCA program staff, to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
- Perform other related duties to fulfill the commitment to quality programs for all members as assigned from time to time by supervisor.
Personal Trainer Responsibilities:

Delivers Personal Training sessions in small group and one-on-one format in a manner that is consistent with YMCA standards, mission, values, goals and practices, including Priority Sam Standards

Ensures appropriate policies and procedures are implemented and monitored to ensure safe and effective member and volunteer participation.

Prepares and sets up program equipment/rooms and cleans and tidies up equipment/rooms after use, reporting any repairs to supervisor.

Organizes and administers a case management approach in managing relationships with participants and ensures they are comfortable and successful in the program to assist them to achieve their personal health goals.

Utilizes systems and technologies available in the YMCA to deliver Personal Training and track required information

Provides reports and additional information to supervisor when requested

Tracks client attendance

Manages client and potential client communication in a timely and professional manner, adhering to best practices as determined by YMCA policies and procedures

Builds relationship with members and seeks opportunities to share the YMCA story and educates members and guests on the YMCA as a Charity.

Ensures qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.

Is available for the minimum required commitment of hours as determined by the supervisor based on centre needs.

Actively participates in scheduled training, meetings and special events.

You bring:
Canada Summer Jobs Criteria:
- Be between 16 to 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- It is a funding requirement of this position that candidates must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
Program Representative Adult Rec Sports Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest and experience in a recreational sports setting
- NCCP Coaching Certification is an asset
- Background in multiple disciplines an asset: basketball, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, floor hockey
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED is an asset
Program Representative Individual Conditioning Qualifications:
- Knowledge of physical fitness normally acquired through completion of courses in physical education or a related field and/or previous experience
- Kinesiology/physical education degree, or similar is an asset
- Participation in or completion of Personal Trainer Certification (i.e. YMCA, CPTN, ACE, etc.) is an asset
- Certified Fitness Consultant (CFC) an asset
- Participation in group fitness, individual conditioning and sports an asset
- Ability to instruct various group fitness classes an asset
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED an asset
Instructor Group Fitness Adult Programs Qualifications:

Diploma or Degree in Recreation Leadership, Kinesiology, Physical Education or related field preferred
-
Current YMCA certification (or equivalent) in at least one Group Fitness stream
-
Current First Aid and CPR certification – Level A or Intermediate First Aid
with CPR-C & AED
-
Experience teaching variety of group fitness classes, including CycleFit, Strength-based and Choreography-based classes
-
Ability to encourage and motivate members and volunteers and acknowledge and appreciate achievements and contributions
-
Evidence of continuing professional development in the area of wellness
Personal Trainer Qualifications:
- Personal Trainer and/or YMCA Personal Training Certification (or equivalent)
- Diploma in Health Education or equivalent an asset
- Previous experience in developing individual fitness programs and coaching individuals to achieve results. Sales and/or customer service experience, preferably in a membership/client based environment an asset
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR or Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED required
- Certified Fitness Consultant (CFC) an asset
- Ability to instruct various group fitness classes an asset
- Ability to encourage and motivate members, and volunteers, acknowledge and appreciate achievements and contributions
