Summary

Reporting to the Resident Care Manager, and under the supervision of the Nurse, the Resident Care Aide (RCA) performs the majority of the daily personal care for residents who can no longer independently perform on their own. Supports and monitors the resident’s individualized wellness needs on a daily basis by following care plans, personal goals and documents and reports any unusual observations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provides personal care to residents such as assistance with bathing, toileting, dressing and care of skin, hair, nails and mouths and other activities of daily living.

  2. Assists residents to and from the dining room in accordance with scheduled meal times. Ensures residents receive adequate nutrition according to individual care plans by feeding, distributing meal trays and supplements, noting changes in appetites and food preferences and reporting to the nurses.

  3. Promotes and assists with social and activity programs, as needed, including taking to programs, assisting with daily exercise and accompanying residents on excursions.

  4. Reports any unusual incident immediately, participates in risk prevention strategies to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.

  5. Documents intake, output and resident observations.

  6. Performs light housekeeping duties to ensure residents’ common areas, rooms, supply and storage areas are kept clean and uncluttered..

  7. Understands and responds to emergency procedures, with knowledge of evacuation techniques.

  8. Answers resident’s calls promptly and responds to requests for assistance from residents.

  9. Uses good body mechanics and proper lifting techniques. Lifts and transfers, porters / ambulates residents in a manner which promotes safety and comfort.

  10. Observes and reports any changes in a resident’s functional and cognitive behavior to the nurse on duty.

  11. Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers of residents.

  12. Ensures equipment and supplies are used and stored in a safe and efficient manner.

  13. Reports unsafe or faulty equipment to the designated supervisor.

  14. Ensures that proper security procedures are followed in the handling and storage of any confidential material.

  15. Attends in service and continuing education programs and approved work related conferences and seminars.

  16. Serves on committees and attends meetings as required.

  17. Participates in multi-disciplinary care planning when requested.

  18. Maintains a current knowledge of and complies with all policies and procedures.

Education & Experience

  • Residential Care Aide Certificate from a reputable / accredited school required
  • Preferred minimum 2 years of long term care or assisted living experience
  • Must be registered in good standing with the BC Care Aide Registry (proof required)
  • Food Safe & WHMIS Certificates an asset
  • Basic First Aid recommended

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Fluent in written and oral English.
  • Physically and mentally able to carry out the duties of the position under minimum supervision
  • Ability to organize workload efficiently
  • Ability to safely operate mechanical lifts and other related equipment
