  Description:UTM108H5: Critical Thinking for STEM LearningThis interdisciplinary course is a practical and conceptual introduction to the nature of science. We will explore STEM subjects as they intersect with society, history, politics, equity, environment, and culture. Lectures, discussions, learning activities and tutorials will help students develop their critical thinking, collaborative, and problem-solving competencies. This course draws on theories and practices from a socio-scientific perspective to help contextualize the social impacts of scientific inquiry. An exploration of related research literature will guide the discussions. Students will gain exposure to philosophical and ideological orientations as well as competing frameworks on the nature of science to become more empowered learners and citizens. Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Science and Technology Studies, Education, Sociology of Science, Environmental Studies, STEM Education, Science or Mathematics Education, or a related interdisciplinary field. A minimum of one year of experience teaching at the university or college level. Demonstrated expertise in the interdisciplinary study of science and society, including the social, historical, political, ethical, environmental, or cultural dimensions of STEM fields. Demonstrated experience teaching courses that that foster critical thinking, discussion, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience working with first-year university students. Demonstrated experience working with multilingual university students. 

Description of Duties:

Attending up to 10 hours of in-person onboarding and course delivery meetings. Teaching in-person weekly classes. Coordinating with a TA to ensure continuity between lectures and tutorials. Marking student assignments (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials). Submitting grades to university officials. Holding regular in-person office hours.
