Technical Theatre Teacher (Grades 9–12) – 0.17 FTE

South High School Campus

Located in Calgary, Foundations for the Future Charter Academy (FFCA) is the largest

public charter school in Alberta, serving over 4000 students in eight campuses

throughout the city. We offer educational programming through a distinctive Direct

Instruction Teaching and Learning Framework (DITLF) that has been refined and

developed within the Alberta context for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Our

mission is to provide a safe and caring environment where the four pillars of our charter,

namely academic excellence, character development, parental involvement and staff

leadership are valued and fostered.

The following position will be open at the South High School Campus of

Foundations for the Future Charter Academy to begin August 18, 2026 until March

19, 2027.

Subject: Technical Theatre (Grades 9–12)

Contract: 0.17 FTE Interim

An Alberta Education certified teacher is required for a Technical Theatre assignment

within our Performing Arts program.

Position Summary

  • FFCA South High School is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and student-

centered educator to join our Performing Arts team. This role supports students

in Grades 9–12 within a vibrant and highly respected program. Annual

productions include a large-scale musical and One-Act plays.

  • The Technical Theatre Teacher will work closely with the Director of Performing

Arts to guide students in developing foundational skills in theatrical production,

including lighting, sound, set design, costumes, props, and backstage operations.

Students will engage in hands-on, collaborative learning experiences that support

creativity, communication, and safe production practices.

Responsibilities

  • Competently plan for, provide, and assess instruction to students

  • Teach Technical Theatre courses (9–15–25–35)

  • Lead and mentor approximately 30 students

  • Guide students in set design, construction, painting, and decoration

  • Oversee props sourcing, creation, and organization

  • Coordinate costume organization and management

  • Supervise lighting, sound, microphones, projections, and backstage operations

  • Serve as Front of House (FOH) Manager for the musical production (shared role)

  • Collaborate with Performing Arts Director, student leaders, and volunteers

  • Coordinate logistics including rentals, sourcing materials, and transportation

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment

  • Support positive classroom culture and student engagement

  • Flexible in sharing roles and responsibilities and adapting to schedule changes

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Educator

Time Commitment (Approx. 174 Hours)

  • September 28 – February 11

o Wednesdays: 3:45 pm – 5:45 pm (occasionally until 7:00 pm)

o Select Fridays: 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

  • February 11

o Theatre move-in (full day)

  • February 17 – March 3

o Wednesdays: 3:45 pm – 7:00 pm

o Fridays: 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm

o Three Saturdays: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm

  • March 5 – March 14 (Tech Week and Performances)

o Evening and weekend commitments required

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Experience in theatre production or technical theatre

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

  • Flexibility and adaptability in both teaching and scheduling

  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours

  • Ability to mentor and engage high school students

  • A desire to contribute to school culture and extracurricular programs

  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional growth

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in FFCA’s new staff
orientation from August 10-14, 2026.
