About the role

One of our clients, a major oil and gas company has tasked us with identifying a Principal Metallurgical Engineer to support their Canada West Engineering team in Calgary, Alberta. This is a 1-year contract position working Monday to Friday and offers the opportunity to serve as a senior technical authority across large-scale capital projects and complex sustaining initiatives within conventional energy, energy transition, hydrogen, CCUS, refining, and industrial facilities.

The Principal Metallurgical Engineer will provide leadership in materials engineering, metallurgy, corrosion, welding, and asset integrity management. Acting as a recognized subject matter expert, this individual will support multidisciplinary engineering teams, provide technical governance, mentor engineers across the discipline, and ensure the technical quality and consistency of materials-related deliverables across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Governance Act as the senior technical authority for metallurgy, materials selection, corrosion engineering, welding, and failure analysis. Establish, interpret, and maintain discipline standards, specifications, technical frameworks, and best practices. Ensure technical integrity and consistency of metallurgical and materials engineering deliverables. Perform expert peer reviews and provide technical assurance for complex or high-risk engineering decisions. Guide material selection and integrity management strategies throughout project lifecycles.

Project & Client Support Provide technical leadership on large multidisciplinary projects and support resolution of complex engineering challenges. Advise stakeholders on materials performance, corrosion management, asset integrity, lifecycle management, and risk mitigation. Support proposal development, scope definition, and technical bid evaluations. Participate in technical workshops, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and engineering governance activities.

Engineering Execution Provide oversight and technical input for: Materials selection diagrams and specifications Corrosion control and mitigation strategies Equipment material specifications and design criteria Welding procedures and fabrication requirements Mill test report reviews and quality assurance activities Collaborate with mechanical, process, piping, and structural engineering teams to ensure materials considerations are integrated into designs. Support constructability, operability, inspection, and long-term reliability objectives.

Mentorship & Technical Development Mentor junior, intermediate, and senior engineers within the metallurgy and materials discipline. Act as the escalation point for complex troubleshooting, failure investigations, and technical problem solving. Contribute to internal technical standards, guidance documents, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Support ongoing capability development within the engineering organization.

Site Support Conduct site visits to operating facilities, fabrication shops, and construction sites. Investigate in-service corrosion, materials degradation, fabrication issues, and non-conformance events. Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality requirements while working in industrial environments.

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA. Extensive experience in metallurgical and materials engineering within oil and gas, refining, gas processing, hydrogen, CCUS, petrochemical, industrial, or energy transition facilities. Expertise in: Ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy Corrosion mechanisms and mitigation strategies Welding metallurgy and fabrication practices Failure analysis and materials degradation Inspection programs and integrity management methodologies Working knowledge of applicable ASME, CSA, API, ASTM, and NACE/AMPP standards. Experience providing technical leadership on complex multidisciplinary engineering projects. Understanding of asset lifecycle management and integrity management principles. Experience working within data-centric engineering and digital project delivery environments. Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to perform plant walks and field inspections while wearing required PPE.

Preferred Qualifications NACE/AMPP certifications or other relevant corrosion and materials engineering certifications. Experience supporting major capital projects and operating assets across multiple industrial sectors.

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, on a 1-year contract, working Monday through Friday. It offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership on complex engineering projects while influencing materials, corrosion, welding, and asset integrity strategies across a diverse project portfolio.
