About the role

ReStart is a program of the John Howard Society of Kingston and District. We provide a wide range of employment counselling services to help people prepare for, find and keep employment. We are seeking an Employment Consultant - Intake & Assessment for a 6 month contract reporting to the Manager, Employment Services.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reception of the general public, drop-in and scheduled clients (in-person and telephone)
  • Complete needs assessment and determine appropriate course of action, including making internal referrals to ES Consultants or the Job Developer for further services
  • Provide new clients with an orientation to our Resource & Information Centre and promote all components of our employment services
  • Working as part of a team, ensure smooth and efficient service delivery within the centre 
  • Assist clients with accessing and utilizing the resources in R&I
  • Provide information and support to clients on job search strategies, current labour market trends and community resources
  • Assist clients with computer usage and provide basic computer literacy instruction
  • Maintain appropriate statistical information and reporting procedures as required.
  • Assist clients in developing, updating and editing their job search materials (resumes, cover letters, etc.)
  • Provide information on all Employment Ontario services and assist clients in accessing those services.
  • Facilitate various job search workshops, information sessions and job fairs.
  • Execute scheduled follow-ups with clients as required
  • Ensure services delivered are within the Employment Ontario guidelines and within the policies and procedures of John Howard Society
  • Communicate with team and supervisory staff on a consistent basis all information pertinent to the effective and efficient delivery of services
  • Provide coverage in the event of staff shortage or absence 
  • All other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree or diploma in the social sciences field. Work experience in an employment services environment may off-set academic standing. Specific education, training or certification in needs assesment is an asset. 
  • Previous experience working with clients who have high/complex needs and/or have multiple barriers to employment. Previous experience working in an outcome-based environment is an asset.
  • Knowledge of motivational, solution-focused and crisis intervention counselling techniques 
  • Knowledge of community resources 
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite, databases and internet
  • Strong communication skills with ability to gather pertinent information in a timely manner
  • Knowledge of professional boundaries and ability to respect confidentiality
  • A customer service orientation
  • A satisfactory Criminal Police Check
