Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator, the Cultural Dance Instructor will develop and deliver engaging dance classes that explore and celebrate dance traditions of one or more culture(s), including but not limited to the following dance modalities:
• Indigenous dance styles, • Afrocentric and Black cultural dance traditions, • 2SLGBTQIA+-inclusive dance traditions, • Hindu classical dance, • Russian folk dance, • Chinese cultural dance, • Persian folkloric dance, • Any additional dance modalities not included here.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
• Choreograph engaging, inclusive, safe, and easy to follow dance moves to a variety of songs within the cultural dance modality/modalities in which you specialize. • Work with participants with disabilities and/or support needs to ensure active participation. • Provide adaptations and modifications to planned exercises/techniques and/or available equipment where appropriate, to make them inclusive for all ages and needs. • Create a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for all participants. • Take attendance. • Communicate with participants and/or their caregivers. • Report any issues, concerns, or areas of development to the Recreation Coordinator. • Create weekly lesson plans.
Experience & Qualifications:
• Experience in instructing the cultural dance modalities in which the candidate specializes. • A deep understanding of the culture in which the candidate’s cultural dance modality expertise is situated. This may be demonstrated through lived experience, academic study, extensive research, work experience, and/or close ties to the community. • Proven experience in teaching, presenting, or facilitating cultural learning experiences is highly desirable. • Experience working effectively with individuals and groups of all ages and skill levels, preferably in a recreational setting. • Minimum 1 year experience teaching in a dance studio or recreational setting. • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills. • Ability to create an inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist space. • Ability to adapt programming for people with disabilities and/or support needs is an asset. • Experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or support needs, preferably in a recreational setting. • This position requires an outgoing, cooperative individual who can function in a dynamic environment. • Ability to deal with challenging and confidential situations. • Previous experience planning and implementing inclusive program plans an asset. • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR-C Certificate or willing to obtain prior to employment. • High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development (considered an asset). • Vulnerable Sector Check is required. • Availability/flexibility to work daytime, evenings, and weekends.
