The Britannia Mine Museum is a self-sustaining, non-profit organization, that creates accessible learning experiences to inspire discovery and connection through guided interpretive programming, self-exploration opportunities, and the preservation of our historical site and artifacts.

Summary of Role
The Curatorial Intern provides support to the Museum’s Curatorial Team through the development and execution of specific projects. The primary project will involve the research, planning, and design of a small-scale exhibit for museum visitors. After becoming familiar with the Britannia Mine Museum’s history, current strategic plan, mission, vision, and values, the intern will select a topic grounded in the museum’s collection and interpretive priorities.

The secondary component of the intern’s project will focus on the in-person, verbal interpretation of objects, photographs, and archival documents from the museum’s collection. The intern will select appropriate collection materials to share with museum visitors during scheduled interpretation periods toward the end of the internship.

The ideal candidate for this role has a passion for growing their heritage career with a special interest in an iconic industrial heritage site that has over 90,000 visitors annually.

What does success look like?
A successful Curatorial Intern will acquire and strengthen key employability and heritage-sector skills, including independent research and critical thinking, exhibit and label writing, use of digitization technologies, basic graphic design, problem solving, and interdepartmental collaboration. These competencies are directly relevant to future work in museums and heritage organizations and are also highly transferable to other fields.

The museum will benefit from this project through enhanced interpretation of underutilized collections and themes. The development of both on-site and digital exhibits will increase public access to heritage materials and provide visitors with new opportunities to engage with the history of Britannia.

Key Responsibilities/Duties
o Familiarize themselves with background materials on Britannia’s history, mission/vision/values, and strategic plan

o Select an exhibit topic aligned with these priorities

o Conduct collections research to identify relevant objects, photographs, or archival materials

o Assess and select objects/photos/archival documents suitable for exhibition

o Draft clear, accessible interpretive text for a visitor-facing panel

o Write object labels that connect items to the broader theme

o Collaborate with the Curator on layout, accessibility, and audience considerations

o Prepare objects for display in consultation with the curator

o Assess and select objects/photos/archival documents suitable for touching or find suitable protection so visitors can interact with the items while keeping them safe

o Host multiple sessions with museum visitors

o Host an exhibit walk through with the museum staff (or at a minimum the Museum Site and Assets Department and the Interpretive Delivery Department)

o Under the guidance of the Curator, responsible for the day-to-day care of the permanent artefact and archive collection, including accessioning, cataloguing, handling, preserving, transporting (on site), storing, and maintaining artefact/archive records according to accepted museum principles.

o Maintain records in the collections database (PastPerfect); may include cataloguing, scanning, photographing, accurately describing objects. Participates fully in the Museum’s Health & Safety Program.

o Adhere to the BMM Code of Conduct and all applicable policies.

o Other relevant duties as assigned.

Key Skills & Qualities
o Foundational curatorial skills such as research, documentation, and collections management .

o A basic understanding of best practices, theory, and relevant considerations related to maintaining, documenting and storing historic collection and archival information.

o An interest in museum studies, storytelling, heritage, social history, mining, and/or earth sciences.

o A general understanding of project planning.

o Excellent computer skills; efficient and able to learn new programs quickly.

o Exceptional organizational skills; able to organize large amounts of information, and working through a project step by step with the end goal in mind.

o High attention to detail and able to data enter with a high degree of accuracy.

o Able to work independently with little supervision, and stay motivated when working on independent tasks.

o Able to work effectively with others, and communicate professionally and respectfully.

o Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and walk on uneven ground All BMM employees must be able to effectively demonstrate the Employee Competencies at the base measurable, working towards the stretch measurable.

Qualifications (Education, Experience & YCW Grant Eligibility)
o Graduate of College, CEGEP, University in a related field (Museum Studies, History, Geology).

o Eligible to participate in Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage

o Prior experience working in museums or the arts and culture sector is considered and asset.

o Keen interest in museum collections, geology or industrial heritage is considered an asset.

An individual may be eligible for a Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage internship if they:
o Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);

o Are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);

o Are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment;

and

o Are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.

Other Important Information:
o Transportation: There is no public transportation to Britannia Mine Museum, candidates must have

reliable transportation.

o Criminal Record Check: All employees must complete a Criminal Record Check, in accordance with the

Museum’s Child and Vulnerable People Code of Conduct. The cost and process are covered by the

Museum.

o Equipment: Employees are required to provide their own steel-toe boots or shoes, and black or dark grey

work-style pants as per the Museum’s uniform requirements.
