The Budget Office forecasts, develops and manages the university's operating budget. We provide information and advice to leaders and budget administrators across the university to make informed decisions on the management of their funds. This role is a 1 year term with the possibility of extension to up to 2 years.

*This position is eligible for a hybrid flex arrangement*
The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range: $69,477 - $73,573 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.
  • Performance range: $77,956 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Budget Associate core purpose is to support the daily operations of the Budget Office by serving as a primary resource for routine inquiries on budget procedures, policies, and system processes. The position serves as a key resource for clients by guiding them through budget-related activities, including position control and budget approvals within UVic Careers, training, and troubleshooting on budget systems and procedures. The role collaborates with HR, payroll, and other stakeholders to manage position changes and budget adjustments and works closely with all members of the Budget Office in the maintenance of the budget throughout the year. Additionally, the Budget Associate supports communication efforts and provides support in development of the University’s budget and when there is collective bargaining.

Job Requirements

Skills:

  • Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize work.
  • Excellent computer application skills including work with relational databases. Must have advanced level skills with Microsoft Excel. An aptitude in working with general office applications such as the Office Suite. Will also require ability to work with Banner, the FAST suite of products, and other software as needed.
  • Ability to listen and ascertain the needs of clients and respond accordingly in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a pleasant and professional attitude and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to work well with frequent interruptions.
  • Requires problem-solving skills and creativity to develop solutions in an increasingly complex environment.
  • Requires ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • Must have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with ability to develop strong relationships. This includes the ability to coach individuals on software systems which they are not familiar with.
  • Requires a solid understanding of systems and processes.
  • Experience working in a complex unionized organization.

Specialized Knowledge/ Education:

  • At minimum, a level of education and training equivalent to a Diploma in Business Administration.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Requires a solid background in finance. A strong understanding of payroll would be considered an asset.
  • Requires a strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) which includes the ability to read and interpret operating statements and balance sheets.

Experience:

  • 3 years of related experience
