About the role

Dougall Media, Thunder Bay’s only locally owned broadcast and multimedia company, has an opening within our newsroom and digital content team for a Digital Journalist & Social Media Intern.

Responsibilities Include:

Content Creation & Publishing

  • Create, edit, and publish engaging news content tailored for digital platforms including TikTok, YouTube, and Meta Ads Manager, ensuring content is optimized for each platform’s audience and format.

On-Camera Reporting

  • Research, script, and deliver news stories on camera, producing clear, accurate, and engaging segments that translate well to social and digital audiences.

Video Editing & Production

  • Edit video content using modern tools and techniques, including short-form storytelling, captions, graphics, and pacing optimized for mobile and social consumption.

Platform Strategy & Trend Monitoring

  • Stay current with social media trends, platform updates, and audience behaviors, and apply insights to improve content performance and engagement.

Collaboration with Newsroom & Broadcast Teams

  • Work closely with reporters, producers, and digital teams to repurpose broadcast content for digital channels and support the organization’s transition from traditional TV to multi-platform storytelling.

Other duties as assigned related to the team objectives and in support of news team.

Requirements for this position:

  • Broadcast Journalism Experience: Proven experience as a television reporter and/or anchor, with strong on-camera presence, clear delivery, and the ability to communicate complex stories in an engaging and concise manner.
  • Digital & Social Media Fluency: Strong understanding of how news content is consumed on platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Meta Ads Manager, including differences in tone, format, and audience expectations.
  • Content Adaptation Skills: Ability to translate traditional broadcast stories into compelling digital-first formats, including short-form video, vertical video, and platform-specific storytelling techniques.
  • Video Editing & Production Skills: Hands-on experience with video editing tools (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar), including adding captions, graphics, and optimizing content for mobile viewing.
  • Ability to Learn & Adapt Quickly: Demonstrated ability to embrace new technologies, formats, and workflows, with a willingness to experiment and evolve alongside rapidly changing social media platforms.
  • Strong News Judgment & Editorial Integrity: Solid understanding of journalism ethics, accuracy standards, and editorial decision-making in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Audience Engagement Mindset: Ability to create content that drives engagement, including understanding hooks, pacing, headlines, and storytelling techniques that resonate with digital audiences.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with newsroom, production, and digital teams.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds as part of job requirements.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence required.
