Research Assistant - Pediatric Emergency Medicine

This position has a term length of 1 year plus 1 day.
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Research Director and Program Manager (as well as Principal Investigators and Research Coordinators), the role of the Research Assistant is to provide support for several ongoing projects led by the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine’s PEAK Research Team in conjunction with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Emergency Department (ED). The Research Assistant will screen and approach families in the Stollery ED, administer study procedures and collect study samples, complete study-specific documentation, and support quality improvement and knowledge mobilization initiatives. The ideal candidate will utilize their strong interpersonal skills when communicating with potential participants and clinical staff on duty. As well, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility in their approach to interacting with children and their families will support them in gaining optimal recruitment. Thriving in a team environment, demonstrating exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision will ensure success in this role. The Research Assistant will be involved with many aspects of the research study, thereby expanding their knowledge of the clinical research process, which may be beneficial in future education and career aspirations. This position may work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as required by research and participant needs.
The successful candidate must be available to work variable shifts at the Stollery Emergency Department. Shifts are scheduled in advance and include a combination of days (7am-3pm), evenings (3pm-11pm), and occasional weekends.

Identify potential participants through the electronic medical record system (Connect Care), interactions with pertinent health care staff, and chart reviews as required

Approaches the subject and/or family for informed consent by providing an explanation of the proposed study

Collect research information and other study data through subject interview and clinical record review (i.e. Connect Care). Ensure all information collected is accurate and complete (entered into REDCap), and is collected according to the methods and guidelines of each individual research project

Collect, process and deliver biological samples to related study laboratories and follow study procedures. Any procedures out of scope of a research assistant will be performed by the clinical emergency department nurse (e.g. blood draws, urine collection).

Conduct respectful, sensitive and culturally safe interactions with families of all backgrounds. Cultural considerations include working with a translator (digital or in person) to communicate with families participating in research studies

Conducts daily aspects of studies according to defined study protocols and maintains study specific source documents

Current enrolment in, or completion of, a post-secondary program

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision

Research-relevant skills including but not limited to: experience with research data collection, obtaining consent/assent, using research-related software, collecting research samples.and

Excellent attention to detail

Excellent communication (verbal and written) and decision-making skills
Preferred:
- One-year related experience in a research environment, healthcare, or work with families/ children is an asset
- Complete required online training modules including: ICH-GCP, Health Canada Division 5, TCPS-2
