About the Program

United for Literacy, in partnership with Westman Immigrant Services, is seeking three caring and enthusiastic Summer Literacy Camp Counsellors to support children and youth learners from Kindergarten to Grade 12 during our Summer Literacy Camp in Brandon, Manitoba.

The program primarily supports newcomer children and youth by providing engaging literacy, numeracy, communication, homework support, and educational enrichment activities in a safe and welcoming environment.

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

· Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment

· Be legally entitled to work in Canada

· Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have official refugee protection status in Canada

· Be available to work the full duration of the program

Key Responsibilities

· Support and assist with daily literacy and educational activities

· Help learners improve reading, writing, communication, homework, and basic math skills

· Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for children and youth from diverse backgrounds

· Assist with educational games, crafts, recreational activities, and group learning sessions

· Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, families, and community partners

· Support daily camp operations and maintain attendance records

· Encourage learner participation, confidence, and positive social interaction

· Assist in maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all participants

Qualifications

· Experience working with children and youth

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills

· Passion for education, literacy, and community engagement

· Ability to work with diverse communities and newcomer families

· Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently and as part of a team

· Education in Social Work, Education, Child and Youth Care, Community Support, or related fields is considered an asset

· Additional languages are considered an asset

· Current Child Abuse Registry Check and Criminal Record Check may be required

· Cultural sensitivity and understanding of newcomer experiences

· Creativity and enthusiasm in working with children and youth

· Leadership and problem-solving abilities
