With more than 1000 sworn and civilian members, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) requires a temporary (18-month contract) Human Resources Advisor. The WRPS delivers exceptional police services to more than 575,000 residents. As the Human Resources Advisor…  

You Will:

  • Coordinate the full-cycle recruitment, screening, and selection processes for internal and external positions and provides information to managers as it pertains to staffing resource issues;
  • Maintain an informational tracking system for postings, temporary employee lists and job competition records;
  • Attend client operational division/branch meetings to advise on human resources matters, identify divisional/branch human resources needs and ensure appropriate human resources staff are involved to address issue or situation;
  • Provide guidance and direction regarding the interpretation and application of human resources policies and procedures, provide collective agreement information and provide referral to resources or program areas within the Service;
  • In conjunction with the HR management staff, coaches and counsels members of client divisions/branches on performance management issues;
  • Assists in administration of the attendance management program, the performance management program and the completion of performance reviews;
  • Coordinate the administration of core HR programs as assigned, including New Employee Orientation and the Ministry of Ontario Special Constable Appointments;
  • Coordinates the administration of Ministry of Ontario Special Constable and Auxiliary Appointments and administers the Cooperative Education Student program; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

You Have:

  • Knowledge of recruitment and selection, testing and interviewing methodologies, performance management, compensation management, organizational effectiveness, labour relations and human resources policies, normally acquired through the attainment of Community College diploma or University degree program in Human Resources, Business Administration (with H.R. accreditation) or equivalent is required;
  • Minimum of two (2) years' of job experience working in a Human Resources function or program area, including experience in interviewing is required;
  • A Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, or designation currently in progress is required; Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation is considered an asset;
  • Job experience in a unionized environment is an asset;
  • Knowledge of the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Waterloo Regional Police job functions, policies and collective agreements as it pertains to staffing, occupation structures, organizational development principles and opportunities;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively adapt to changing conditions and shifting priorities, ensuring deadlines are met;
  • Public relations, communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of listening;
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and Power Point; and
  • A valid Class 'G' Ontario driver's licence with no more than six (6) demerit points.


You Are:

  • Able to develop and conduct interviews and information and training sessions for staffing and performance management issues;
  • Able to read applications and assess content during the recruitment and selection process;
  • Able to read and interpret reports, policies and procedures and collective agreements, explaining content and intent to client divisions/branches as required;
  • Able to adapt to frequently changing staffing needs and priorities; and
  • Able to meet the testing and police security requirements for the position.
