The Operations Intern will operate and maintain farm machinery such as sprayers and spinners while assisting with crop input applications and field scouting. They will also support logistics, inventory management, and data collection to ensure efficient agronomic operations.
Midwest Co-op is currently accepting resumes for the position of Operations Intern. Under the direction of the Agronomy Manager, the Operations Intern will provide hands-on experience operating sprayers, spinners, and other modern farm machinery during peak agronomy seasons. This role supports field operations by executing crop input applications, maintaining equipment, and assisting with data collection and scouting. The position offers exposure to a wide range of agronomic practices and technologies, contributing to both in-field, operational, and office-based tasks. In addition, a student bursary will be awarded upon successful completion of the summer contract. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS EQUIPMENT OPERATION & MAINTENANCE * Operate sprayers, spinners, loaders, forklifts, and trucks for crop input application. * Use GPS and precision ag tools for accurate application of fertilizers and crop protection products. * Perform basic equipment maintenance, calibration, cleaning, and safety checks. * Assist with minor repairs and maintain high standards for vehicle and equipment care. PRODUCT HANDLING & LOGISTICS * Load, mix, and apply fertilizers, chemicals, and seed. * Transport crop inputs and equipment with proper documentation. * Load/unload materials and organize inventory for efficient access. * Support blending, tank weighing, and inventory counts as needed. AGRONOMY SUPPORT * Assist with field scouting, mapping, and data collection. * Maintain accurate records of field activities and applications. * Work with agronomy teams to support timely service delivery. GROWER ENGAGEMENT * Help facilitate in-season grower meetings and field events * Contribute to promotional video creation, depending on technical skills * Collaborate with the Agronomy Manager on various agronomic and operational tasks LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT * Participate in a personalized summer research project based on individual interests * Gain exposure to agronomic practices, crop management, and precision agriculture tools OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS * Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations for employees: use or wear any equipment, protective devices or clothing required by the employer; report any known workplace hazard to the employer or supervisor; report any known contravention of the Act or regulations to the employer or supervisor; not use or operate any equipment or work in a way that may endanger any worker. * Participate in MCS training which includes, but not limited to, the mandatory Ministry of Labour course, MCS Health & Safety Standards and Policies, and Accessibility Policies (AODA). * Understands and follows all Corporate, Legislative and Health & Safety and Environmental policies and procedures. * Represents MCS in a competent and professional manner. Maintains proper personal image and assigned company vehicle in a manner which promotes company image and sets example for the department. Represents MCS at meetings, providing information, communications, and leadership in local activities. * Working as part of the MCS team, ensures that company objectives, customer service levels, employee relations and inter-branch relations are improved and promoted. * Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS * Currently enrolled in a college or university program in Agriculture or related field * Valid driver’s license * Interest in crops, agronomy, and hands-on fieldwork * Strong communication and teamwork skills * Comfortable using basic technology (phone, apps, computer software, GPS) * Positive attitude and eagerness to learn * Willing to work flexible hours during busy season WORKING CONDITIONS * Work indoors and outdoors in varied conditions including heat, rain, and wind * Exposure to noise, odours, vibration, and confined spaces * Physically active role involving walking fields, lifting equipment, and handling samples * Lifting or moving up to 50lbs may be required. * Team-oriented environment with regular interaction with sales/operational staff and growers * Independent work expected at times, including solo field scouting and sampling WHY WORK FOR US Midwest Co-op believes that taking care of our employees is essential to our business.
